Exploring Challenges in Establishing Community Places

In 2023, a series of research initiatives funded by the Mitsubishi Foundation kicked off, aiming to address the critical aspects of community space establishment. Led by esteemed professors such as Professor Mitsunori Ishida from Waseda University, Professor Sayaka Fujii from Tsukuba University, and Professor Satoko Horita from Keio University, this project offers an in-depth examination of the dynamics involved in creating spaces that foster community and support.

The non-profit organization Comachi Plus, based in Yokohama, Japan, has taken a firm stance on enriching community ties through child-rearing since its inception in 2012. Their guiding motto is "Enhancing Parenting through Community Support". By offering a robust platform for isolated parents, Comachi Plus aims to transform parenting experiences into opportunities that draw on community strengths.

From fiscal year 2023, Comachi Plus has stepped up its efforts by initiating the nationwide rollout of café-style community spaces, specifically designed to cultivate comfortable and engaging environments for families. As part of this initiative, they have conducted various workshops and internship programs across multiple prefectures, including Okayama, Nagano, and Hokkaido.

On September 12, 2026, a significant report meeting was convened to discuss the findings from a series of follow-up surveys conducted on participants of the community space creation courses as well as insights drawn from field visits to cities such as Chikuma in Nagano, Unnan in Shimane, Mitsuhiro Town in Miyazaki, and Gojome Town in Akita. This event brought together key academic figures, including the aforementioned professors, to engage in a dialogue about the challenges encountered throughout the community space establishment process.

Moderated by Mori, the representative of Comachi Plus who has been actively involved in both research and practical implementations, this discussion aimed to attract various stakeholders. Those interested in community development, currently involved in related projects, or those looking to provide support were specifically invited to attend. This inclusive approach fosters a collaborative atmosphere for sharing ideas and resources.

The report meeting will be held in a hybrid format, allowing participants to take part either in-person or online via Zoom. The physical venue will accommodate around 20 attendees, with online participation being unlimited. The gathering is not only a platform for conveying information but also a space to connect with others who share the same vision for community building.
