Discover the Culinary Treasures of Hokkaido at Daimaru Sapporo's Discovery Event

Dive into Hokkaido's Culinary Masterpieces at Discovery Hokkaido 2026

Hokkaido's stunning landscape provides an ideal environment for a cornucopia of fresh ingredients, making it a haven for food lovers. This summer, Daimaru Sapporo is proud to present 'Discovery Hokkaido 2026,' a culinary event that promises to spotlight the region's remarkable produce. Initiated in autumn 2006, this event has seen 29 successful iterations, contributing to its venerable reputation among Sapporo's food enthusiasts.

As part of this year's festivities, the event has shifted from its traditional summertime schedule in July to June, allowing for the introduction of new and lesser-known ingredients to the spotlight. This year's theme centers around highlighting the most prominent produce from Hokkaido, which proudly ranks as the nation's number one in various agricultural products. Attendees can expect to encounter surprising finds ranging from familiar favorites to sensational discoveries, all while celebrating Hokkaido's bountiful harvest.

Highlighting Fresh Produce - The Stars of Discovery Hokkaido

One of the standout ingredients at this year's event is asparagus from 'Mos Farm Mukawa.' Hokkaido accounts for approximately 16% of the nation's asparagus production. This artisanal farm, created by Mos Burger in Mukawa Town in 2014, emphasizes sustainable practices and offers high-quality asparagus not available at Mos Burger outlets. At the event, guests can purchase 300g of fresh asparagus for just ¥1,000, with a limited daily supply of 200 packets available.

Mos Farm Mukawa's asparagus is cultivated with care and nourished with premium compost, yielding vibrant, sweet, and tender spears. The uniqueness of their produce shines during June, when house-grown asparagus outperforms outdoor crops, ensuring a pleasant texture and lack of bitterness—perfect for any culinary endeavor.

Culinary Collaborations

In addition to fresh produce, the event showcases collaborative creations with talented pastry chefs from Hokkaido. Using Mos Farm Mukawa's exquisite asparagus, these chefs have devised French pastries that emphasize creativity and taste. Signature offerings include the 'Verrine Asperges' from Bon Vibane, priced at ¥740, which combines bruléed asparagus with citrus in a delightful glass dessert.

Another highlight is the asparagus and potato quiche from Tsuru Cafe, priced at ¥702, showcasing the farm's asparagus in a hearty dish that's perfect for any meal.

Hokkaido's Seafood Excellence: The Mighty Octopus

Hokkaido's seafood is equally impressive, with the region contributing over 60% of Japan's octopus catch—predominantly featuring the renowned 'Mizudako.' Known as one of the largest cephalopods on the globe, Mizudako is famed for its tender flesh and rich, sweet flavor profile.

At the event, seafood lovers can indulge in Mizudako sashimi from Hokkaido's Huxtun Sushi, available for ¥1,080 per pack, or sample their delicious octopus nigiri, also for ¥1,080 for four pieces. An exciting option is the 'Minazuki Gozen' from Miyagawa Honkan, priced at ¥5,980; this set beautifully combines grilled eel with tangy octopus salad, creating a harmonious balance of flavors in one unforgettable dish.

A Celebration of Hokkaido's Rich Food Culture

'Kitchen Discovery Hokkaido 2026' is not just an event; it’s a gastronomic journey that immerses participants in the rich flavors unique to Hokkaido. As the event continues to evolve over its long history, each iteration introduces fresh insights into the local culinary landscape.
