A New Era in Crop Protection with ADAMA's Gilboa™

Understanding Gilboa™



Gilboa™ works by targeting nucleic acid metabolism within Group 32, a biochemical pathway that has not been utilized by any existing fungicides for cereal crops. This innovative approach offers much-needed protection against prevalent diseases affecting cereals and oilseed rape, such as Septoria and Sclerotinia. The introduction of Gilboa™ provides European farmers with a powerful tool to manage resistance effectively.

Florian Wagner, the Executive Vice President of Portfolio and Innovation at ADAMA, commented on this breakthrough, stating, “Gilboa represents a major step forward in fungicide innovation, providing growers with an entirely new way to combat fungal pathogens in cereals.” Its compatibility with existing fungicides further enhances its role in comprehensive disease management strategies.

The Challenge of Fungal Diseases



Fungal diseases like Septoria have increasingly shown resistance to traditional chemical solutions over time, diminishing their effectiveness and posing challenges for farmers aiming to protect their crops. This evolving threat necessitates the introduction of innovative solutions like Gilboa™, which expands the options available for effective crop protection, thus safeguarding yields and enhancing food security.

Alex Mills, Head of Global Fungicides at ADAMA, highlighted that Gilboa™ is a game-changer. He explained that its novel mode of action not only provides much-needed diversity in fungicide options but also helps to reduce the risk of resistance development among plant pathogens. “By offering farmers additional tools, Gilboa supports long-term, reliable disease control,” Mills stated. This alignment with sustainable agricultural practices ensures farmers can protect their livelihoods and crops effectively.

Proven Performance



The efficacy of Gilboa™ has been demonstrated through extensive trial results conducted by ADAMA. In trials specifically targeting wheat Septoria, a significant proportion of crops treated with Gilboa™ showed superior results compared to existing fungicide solutions. Moreover, the novel ingredient provided extended disease control, with lasting effects noted for up to 35 days post-application. Notably, trials also indicated that over 70% of flag leaf area remained green longer after the final treatment, contributing directly to enhanced yields.

Gilboa™ was submitted for registration in 2023, with expectations for approval in Great Britain by 2027 and throughout the EU by 2029. In the meantime, field events showcasing its technical performance are scheduled in the UK for June 2025, allowing farmers and stakeholders to observe its benefits firsthand.
