Pantech's Innovative Custom Packaging Solutions
In response to the increasing demand for sustainable packaging solutions, Pantech Co., Ltd., a company specializing in plastic recycling based in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, has launched a new service that offers tailored packaging materials made from recycled plastics derived from used stretch films. This new service aims to meet the needs of manufacturers and brand owners seeking compliance with the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) while maintaining environmental considerations and competitive pricing.
Understanding the Need for Change
The transition to a circular economy is gaining momentum globally, with Europe leading the way in enhancing the sustainability of packaging materials. The PPWR will come into effect in February 2025, with requirements gradually becoming applicable from August 2026. Among those requirements are mandates to produce plastic packaging that is recyclable or contains a certain percentage of recycled plastics by 2030. As packaging products that do not meet the PPWR standards will be banned from the European market, Japanese companies operating in Europe must align their practices accordingly.
Pantech recognized that many brand owners and manufacturers wanted to switch from virgin material-based packaging to those made from recycled plastics. Leveraging its expertise in recycling, particularly through its proprietary brand, Filmate®, which focuses on the horizontal recycling of used stretch films, Pantech has initiated this new service to address the urgent needs of its clients.
Tailored Solutions for Diverse Needs
The customized packaging service by Pantech offers a variety of options that cater to specific requirements, including purpose, specifications, and necessary quantities. Customers can request packaging materials such as standard bags, zip-lock poly bags, garment covers, pallet covers, tote bags, and shoppers, all made from recycled plastic materials sourced from used stretch films.
The products supplied through this service will be fully composed of recycled materials, significantly lowering CO2 emissions and fossil fuel usage compared to conventional products made from 100% virgin materials over their life cycle. Additionally, these packaging solutions can be segregated and collected after use, enabling the materials to be recycled back into film products, promoting the concept of horizontal recycling.
Furthermore, Pantech handles the entire process from the collection of used films to the production of recycled materials, the design and manufacturing of film products, and their distribution. This vertically integrated approach ensures that Pantech can offer environmentally friendly solutions at reasonable prices.
Positive Reception in the Market
Since launching this innovative service, Pantech has received numerous orders and inquiries from progressive companies in the automotive and apparel sectors, which are already operating in the European market. These companies are eager to adopt advanced environmental responses through Pantech's sustainable packaging solutions, reflecting the growing importance of environmental stewardship in business practices.
