Celebrating 30 Years: ITRI Europe Office Strengthens Technology Cooperation

ITRI Europe Office Celebrates 30 Years of Innovation in Berlin

The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) recently commemorated the 30th anniversary of its Europe Office with an impressive technology forum in Berlin. This milestone not only signifies the office's historical journey since its inception in 1996 but also highlights the ongoing and deepening collaboration between Taiwan and European nations in the realm of technology and industrial innovation.

The event brought together notable experts and representatives from leading European research and development entities, including the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the European Association of Research and Technology Organisations (EARTO), and Technische Universität Braunschweig (TU Braunschweig). Such a diverse gathering underlines the significant roles these organizations have played in fostering technological cooperation.

Established in Germany, the ITRI Europe Office set out to strengthen Taiwan's industrial innovation capabilities. Over the past three decades, it has successfully positioned itself as a crucial hub for Taiwan–Europe innovation partnerships. The office facilitated Taiwan's involvement in more than 20 Horizon Europe programs and established collaborative agreements with 14 European countries, including major players like Germany, the UK, France, and Spain. Additionally, nearly 100 joint research and development projects have been initiated, demonstrating the tangible outcomes of these partnerships.

During his keynote address, ITRI Chairman Tsung-Tsong Wu emphasized the evolution of ITRI from merely seeking technology to establishing itself as a strategic partner within the European innovation landscape. He remarked, "The 30th anniversary of the ITRI Europe Office marks the deepening of Taiwan–Europe technology cooperation and reflects ITRI's transformation from a technology scout to a strategic partner for the European innovation ecosystem." This transformation speaks volumes about the mutual trust that has developed over the years, essential for any form of successful collaboration.

One notable partnership highlighted during the celebration was between ITRI and the Fraunhofer Institute, which dates back to 1992. Their renewed five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is set to expand collaboration in areas such as healthcare, information and communication technology (ICT), and green energy, while also venturing into new territories like artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. Johann Feckl, Director of Pre-Competitive Research and International Affairs at Fraunhofer, echoed this sentiment during his speech, stating that the solidity of the ITRI-Fraunhofer partnership exemplifies how continuity and trust yield significant and lasting impacts in applied research.

In conjunction with the anniversary celebrations, ITRI also hosted the ITRI UK Tech Day, commemorating one year since the establishment of its UK Office. During this event, ITRI formalized further cooperation initiatives with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), actively engaging in projects spanning from semiconductor technologies to AI.

Looking ahead, ITRI aims to align its initiatives with the European Union’s research and development priorities, particularly focusing on net-zero emissions, biomedicine, digital innovation, and space technologies. The organization is determined to continue reinforcing Taiwan’s technological ties with Europe through its offices in both Berlin and London. Expanding its outreach to partners in regions like France, the Netherlands, and Central and Eastern Europe, ITRI is set to explore emerging fields, including the drone industry.

With a robust network that encompasses various sectors including industry, government, academia, and startups, ITRI is not only accelerating technology exchanges but also enhancing policy dialogue and cross-domain innovation. This proactive approach positions Taiwan as a pivotal player in global industrial transformation, contributing to the advancement of various technology sectors on an international stage.

As the ITRI Europe Office embarks on its next chapter, the commitment to fostering collaboration and innovation remains its core mission, promising to drive impactful technological advancements for years to come.
