Sophie's Gasthaus Becomes New Braunfels' First Michelin-Recommended Hotel in 2026

Sophie's Gasthaus: A Distinct Addition to the Michelin Guide

In a remarkable achievement for the local hospitality scene, Sophie's Gasthaus, nestled in the heart of historic downtown New Braunfels, Texas, has been included in the Michelin Guide’s 2026 recommendations, becoming the first hotel from this vibrant city to earn such a distinction. As one of only seventy hotels in Texas to make the cut, this accolade celebrates not just the quality of the hotel but the charm of its surroundings.

Sophie's Gasthaus opened its doors in 2020, charming visitors with its exquisite blend of history, art, and homage to German heritage. The hotel, housed in a beautifully restored mansion from the early 1900s, showcases the traditional German architecture that invokes nostalgia, while also offering a modern take through its thoughtfully curated decor and artwork.

Owner Jamie Seals expressed immense pride at the recognition, stating, “It is an incredible honor to be selected by The Michelin Guide. Our team has worked diligently to curate a boutique hotel that celebrates its German heritage and creative spirit.” This speaks to the essence of Sophie's Gasthaus: a warm, inviting atmosphere that promises a unique guest experience.

The Selection Process

The methodology behind Michelin’s selections is rigorous yet transparent. Inspectors assess candidates based on five essential criteria that measure excellence in various aspects of the hotel experience. These include exceptional interior design and architecture, commitment to quality service, consistency in comfort and maintenance, fair value in relation to the guest experience, and a distinct personality reflecting individuality and authenticity.

General Manager Erin Matthews explained their journey toward this prestigious recognition.
