Alimentation Couche-Tard Finalizes Deal to Acquire Retail Assets from Irving Oil in Ontario and Québec

Alimentation Couche-Tard Expands Its Retail Footprint in Canada

On October 9, 2026, Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc., a leading convenience store operator, announced its latest strategic move by signing a definitive agreement to acquire retail assets from Irving Oil in Québec and Ontario. This transaction marks another significant step in Couche-Tard's ongoing quest to expand its presence in the convenience store market, especially in regions where it already operates.

The agreement encompasses 50 retail locations currently managed by Couche-Tard under the existing Québec Alliance with Irving Oil, as well as two additional retail sites located in Pembroke and Cornwall, Ontario. Furthermore, the acquisition will also enhance fuel supply operations for 71 retail sites that are already owned and operated by Couche-Tard within Québec.

Importantly, the deal includes 18 cardlock sites, with 16 situated in Québec and 2 in Ontario. Most notably, these cardlock sites overlap with retail locations in the acquisition, thereby streamlining operations and improving service delivery. Customers of Irving Oil's fleet services will continue to enjoy uninterrupted service at these locations under a long-term agreement between Couche-Tard and Irving Oil, ensuring a smooth transition and continuity of service for existing clients.

Stéphane Trudel, the Senior Vice President of Operations at Alimentation Couche-Tard, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, "This agreement builds on our longstanding relationship with Irving Oil and our experience operating these locations. These are markets and customers we know well. The transaction would support our continued investment in the everyday convenience experience we offer our customers." This comment underscores the strategic importance of the acquisition—not just in terms of numbers, but also in reinforcing their commitment to enhance customer experience in familiar markets.

The transaction remains subject to conventional closing conditions and regulatory approvals, including those defined under the Competition Act. This is a standard procedure for acquisitions, ensuring fair competition and compliance within the industry.
