Nuvoton Unveils Plans for Mass Production of Innovative BM-ICs

Nuvoton Technology Corporation Japan to Initiate Mass Production of Advanced BM-ICs

Nuvoton Technology Corporation Japan (NTCJ) is at the forefront of semiconductor innovation with the introduction of its new battery management integrated circuits (BM-ICs) identified as "KA49701A" and "KA49702A". These cutting-edge ICs are specifically optimized for 48V battery applications and are slated for mass production beginning in April 2025.

Enhancing Safety and Efficiency

The newly developed BM-ICs play a critical role in ensuring the safe operation of battery systems, particularly during extreme conditions such as overloads or excessive discharges. Historically, failures in the main circuits responsible for measuring cell voltages (like the AD converter or the multiplexer within the BM-IC) have necessitated the implementation of external protection circuits, which can increase system costs and board area.

In a significant advancement, NTCJ has incorporated internal diagnostics and safety functionalities within the main circuits of these BM-ICs. This diagnostic capability can detect faults within the main circuit and manage the cut-off switch, thus enhancing the safety of the Battery Management System (BMS) while also reducing overall system costs.

Industry-Leading Voltage Measurement Accuracy

Another remarkable feature of the KA49701A and KA49702A is the 16-bit AD converter, which has been engineered to minimize noise and includes a digital filter. This technological refinement has led to an industry-leading voltage measurement precision of +/-2.9 mV, enabling users to optimize the maximum capacity of their batteries. The products maintain accurate voltage readings across a wide temperature range, making them highly suitable for applications requiring precise measurements in both cold and hot environments, such as stationary battery systems that meet the relevant national standards in China.

Significant Power Savings

By minimizing the duration of high-energy voltage measurement cycles, Nuvoton has achieved an operational current of just 260 microamperes, which is less than one-tenth of previous models. This efficiency improvement translates into extended battery life. Moreover, the design optimization has reduced the shutdown current to a mere 0.1 microamperes or lower. Utilizing these ICs significantly curtails self-discharge, which is critical for avoiding battery deterioration during long-distance transport and extended storage.
