NJIT Establishes a New Research Center in Kenilworth
The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is making remarkable strides in the field of scientific research by expanding its facilities into the Northeast Science and Technology (NEST) Center, situated in Kenilworth, NJ. This new center is the responsibility of four professors and accommodates 26 students, both postgraduate and undergraduate, who now have access to advanced laboratory environment tailored for groundbreaking research.
NJIT recently secured a lease for 25,000 square feet of this cutting-edge facility, previously the global research headquarters of Merck. The center aims to foster innovations in various scientific fields such as photonics, biomaterials, environmental science, and sustainable technology. With this initiative, NJIT is not only broadening its academic reach, but also reinforcing its commitment to preparing students for careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
The NEST Center spans over 100 acres and is specifically zoned for life science innovation. It addresses the pressing need for immediately available, customizable office, laboratory, and bio-manufacturing space within the tri-state area. Here, researchers from NJIT will focus on developing novel technologies to confront ecological challenges, such as:
- - Creating new imaging and photoresponsive materials to study disease processes.
- - Developing polymeric systems aimed at drug delivery and gene therapy.
- - Innovating strategies for chemical recycling of consumer plastics.
- - Investigating water-particulate interactions to better manage contaminant fates and devise sustainable global solutions.
NJIT President, Teik C. Lim, expressed enthusiasm about this partnership, describing it as a significant milestone in establishing a dedicated hub for life sciences, technology, and pharmaceutical research. He emphasized that students and researchers would be able to leverage the facility to explore cutting-edge disciplines including biomedical engineering, material science, chemistry, and even artificial intelligence applications.
The NJIT @ NEST Center for Translational Research is expected to extend the university's successful history of converting foundational research into practical solutions that can benefit society while stimulating economic growth in New Jersey. President Lim highlighted that NJIT's environmental engineering program has significantly expanded since relocating teams to NEST, allowing for advancements in environmental systems modeling, treatment of water and wastewater, and analysis of environmental impacts—all essential factors in a world increasingly aware of ecological preservation.
Matt Flath, Senior Vice President of Asset Management at Onyx Equities—a co-owner of the NEST Center—stated that moving to this state-of-the-art facility provides NJIT students with world-class laboratory resources and invaluable access to other researchers focusing on similar challenges.
In addition to Onyx Equities, Machine Investment Group and Pivot Real Estate Partners are stakeholders in the NEST Center, further securing its position as a vital research base for innovation in life sciences.
