Insights from the 19th Employee Awareness Survey

This survey, aimed at gauging employee sentiments about workplace trust, employment, and work styles, was conducted from July 6 to 7, 2023, targeting 1,100 Japanese employed individuals via the internet.

Economic Outlook

The survey highlighted growing concerns about the economic forecast among employees. The proportion of respondents who perceived the current economy as 'bad' or 'somewhat bad' surged from 51.3% in January 2023 to 56.6%. Among those organizations utilizing AI, approximately 64.7% of employees acknowledged they were using AI in their work. Despite the positive sentiment around AI—with 58.6% believing it enhances overall workplace efficiency—concerns regarding data security and the broader implications of AI persist, with nearly 57% expressing unease about potential information leaks or copyright violations.

Changing Career Perspectives

The survey also examined the shifting landscape in career development and skill enhancement, showing a notable decline in the percentage of employees stating they have no interest in side jobs—from 69.2% to 63.3%. Interestingly, 72.9% reported they were not actively thinking about their career plans, marking a peak since the survey's inception. Meanwhile, 17.2% of participants undertook training related to the use and considerations of Generative AI in the past three months, underscoring a movement towards acquiring knowledge and skills relevant to modern workloads.

Decline in Telework

The results also indicated a downturn in teleworking practices, with the implementation rate dropping from 15.4% in January to an all-time low of 14.5%. Data revealed that the percentage of respondents working five or more days a week in the office hit a record high of 32.5%, while those working zero days at home fell to 10.6%. This shift suggests a growing trend of returning to office-based work.

On another note, when queried about replacing coworkers on parental leave, 75.1% of employees preferred financial support over additional staff, revealing a prioritization of monetary assistance in workplace adjustments.
