CaseBioscience® Collaborates on Innovative Cell Therapy Preservation
In a significant development within the biotechnology landscape, CaseBioscience® has announced its collaboration with a multidisciplinary team led by Likarda, which has secured up to $7.3 million funding from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H). This partnership aims to enhance the ambient preservation of cell therapies, significantly impacting the accessibility and storage of biological medications.
The Vision Behind the Collaboration
The newly launched ARPA-H BioStabilization Systems (BoSS) program aims to revolutionize how cell therapies are produced, stored, and transported. Unlike traditional methods that require constant refrigeration, the BoSS initiative seeks to develop technologies that facilitate room-temperature storage of live cells, making advanced medications as easy to transport as common over-the-counter items like aspirin.
The BioEnvironmental Reversible Stabilization (RAB) team stands out among the three selected for this prestigious program, representing a diverse assembly of expertise that includes conservation science, cell biology, metabolic research, bioengineering, immunology, and stem cell biology.
Program Goals and Structure
The primary goal of the BoSS initiative is to create groundbreaking methods that minimize reliance on the cold chain logistics currently required for the storage and transportation of many cell-based therapies. The project is set to begin with an initial phase lasting 15 months from September 24, 2026, focusing on innovative protective strategies for cells and physiological mechanisms that allow ambient temperature storage.
With the potential to simplify distribution processes and broaden access to advanced therapeutic options, the project addresses a critical barrier currently faced by the field of regenerative medicine.
Expert Insights on the Collaboration
Dr. John Baust, a recognized leader in biopreservation, noted that while the concept of dry preserving living cells has been explored for over two decades, major scientific and engineering challenges have hindered its success. He emphasizes that the BoSS program enables a multifaceted approach to tackle these challenges, potentially setting a new standard for biological product preservation and distribution.
Moreover, Dr. Lynda McGinnis, CaseBioscience's Director of R&D, reflects on the opportunity to revisit foundational research on drying sperm that began 25 years ago, underscoring the advancements made in the field since then.
Dr. Kevin Flynn, CaseBioscience's Chief Scientific Officer, points out the excitement surrounding this collaboration. He emphasizes the depth of scientific inquiry and resources to drive innovation that could significantly enhance the field, turning previously unimaginable ideas into tangible progress.
Commitment to Innovation
Ami Mezezi, co-founder and CEO of CaseBioscience, expressed pride in the recognition from ARPA-H, highlighting the funding as a testament to their scientific capabilities and technology in preservation. He underscores the transformative potential this initiative holds for making live cell therapies as accessible as conventional medications, echoing the broader mission of the collaboration.
The research and development efforts under the BoSS initiative have already kicked off, and the RAB team is poised to innovate in the field of ambient-preservation technologies.
