Huawei Digital Power Fuels ASEAN's Move Towards Zero-Carbon Goals
The ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF-25) took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from October 15 to 17, 2025, under the theme "Powering ASEAN: Bridging Boundaries, Building Prosperity." This gathering underscored the importance of regional energy interconnectivity, clean transitions, and technological advancements, attracting over 1,500 representatives, including energy ministers, policy-makers, industry organizations, and business leaders from the ten ASEAN nations.
At the forefront of innovation, Huawei Digital Power Asia Pacific presented its high-quality Smart PV+ESS (Photovoltaic and Energy Storage Systems) solutions suitable for any scenario, reaffirming its commitment to leading ASEAN's carbon neutrality transformation. Xia Hesheng, Vice President of Huawei Digital Power and President of its Strategy and Marketing Department, delivered an opening speech titled "Enabling the ASEAN Power Grid: The Critical Role of Grid-Forming Technologies for Cross-Border Power Trading." He emphasized the necessity of energy interconnection in the ASEAN region and the importance of stable electricity transmission and consumption for grids with a high percentage of renewable energy.
Huawei Digital Power has transitioned from a passive role in the PV+ESS industry toward becoming a pivotal force in grid formation over the last decade. With its all-scenario grid-forming technologies ensuring high reliability and security, Huawei is setting a benchmark for excellence in the sector. Notably, Huawei’s technology supports the world’s first GWh-level microgrid project at The Red Sea destination in Saudi Arabia, a regenerative tourism megaproject powered entirely by green energy. Additionally, its 1 GWh energy storage project in Cambodia received certification from TÜV SÜD.
Heading toward the future, Huawei Digital Power is committed to collaborating with clients and partners across ASEAN to establish a benchmark for energy transformation through its advanced grid-forming technologies and high-quality commitments.
During a roundtable session, Chen Xieming, a global power grid expert from Huawei Digital Power, discussed strategies for enhancing ASEAN's power grid resilience. He stated, "Defining unified regional grid standards is essential for ensuring grid security and promoting interconnectivity among ASEAN countries." In systems with a significant proportion of renewables, the establishment of technological standards for grid formation is vital for safeguarding regional grid resilience.
Chong Chern Peng, Vice President of Huawei Digital Power Malaysia, highlighted Malaysia's strategic position within the ASEAN power grid during the roundtable discussion on CEO leadership alongside Boston Consulting Group. As a hub for regional energy interconnection, Malaysia has initiated significant energy collaborations with neighboring countries, including Thailand and Singapore, through cross-border energy transactions. To facilitate the ASEAN power grid project, each country’s power networks must be resilient and dynamic; thus, grid-forming technologies are indispensable.
In discussions with ministers and CEOs, Xia Hesheng reiterated that fostering prosperity in ASEAN's energy economy requires building stable, high-quality energy infrastructure along with relevant policy guidelines and standards. With its all-scenario grid-forming solutions, Huawei aims to enhance short-circuit levels, inertia, and black start capabilities within the regional power network.
The Red Sea destination in Saudi Arabia exemplifies this ambition, where thousands of PCS (Power Conversion Systems) are connected in off-grid mode, capable of starting up without prior power within minutes. Huawei Digital Power has implemented a comprehensive security protection system across its energy storage solutions, adhering to strict quality control throughout the product lifecycle to ensure long-term reliability. For instance, in the Golmud project in Qinghai, Huawei achieved a failure rate below 0.5% over 13 years of stable operation.
Huawei Digital Power is dedicated to supporting ASEAN in developing its PV+ESS sector, transforming it into a global benchmark for energy transition, relying on high-quality end-to-end products and technologies. The ASEAN region's green future is contingent on stable and efficient energy solutions. At AEBF-25, Huawei Digital Power not only showcased its leading grid-forming technologies and system capabilities but also stressed its commitment to fostering a green, intelligent, and sustainable future. Moving forward, Huawei Digital Power will double down on research and development investments and enhance cooperation with local partners to jointly advance ASEAN's energy mix transformation. The company firmly believes that technology is the key to achieving a zero-carbon world, positioning Huawei Digital Power as a steadfast partner in this vital journey.
