A New Cultural Experience in Okinawa
The vibrant beauty of Okinawa's traditional craft,
Ryukyu Bingata, is now poised to captivate even more visitors, thanks to a new collaboration between
Kazetuchi Inc. and
Mitsubishi Estate Hotels and Resorts. Starting on
July 10, 2026, guests at the
Royal Park Hotel Iconic Naha will be able to immerse themselves in a fresh cultural experience entitled
Ryukyu Experience. This program is not merely a sightseeing tour; it is a deep dive into the craft's historical significance and artistic techniques.
The Importance of Preserving Ryukyu Bingata
Ryukyu Bingata is an ancient dyeing technique that dates back to the Ryukyu Kingdom, symbolizing Okinawa's rich cultural heritage. It has been recognized as an important intangible cultural asset by the Japanese government. However, the craft faces challenges today, especially with rising costs for essential tools like brushes and stencils due to a shortage of artisans. Without these resources, the transfer of such vital skills to future generations becomes increasingly difficult.
Kazetuchi Inc. aims to tackle these challenges head-on by implementing a novel approach that uses tourism-related revenue as a funding source for preserving this craft. By partnering with Mitsubishi Estate Hotels and Resorts, they have designed a program that directly contributes part of its earnings to resolving the issues faced by local artisans.
