Sean Astin to Inspire Graduates at American University's Fall Commencement in 2024
American University proudly announces that Sean Astin, celebrated for his roles as Mikey Walsh in "The Goonies" and Samwise Gamgee in "The Lord of the Rings", will be the keynote speaker at its upcoming fall commencement. This event is significant as it not only marks the graduation ceremony for the Class of 2024 but also highlights Astin's recent academic accomplishment as a recipient of his Master’s degree in Public Administration and Policy from the university.
The ceremony is set to take place on December 15 and is expected to celebrate approximately 1,475 graduates from various programs. During the proceedings, Astin will also be honored with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree, acknowledging both his professional achievements and contributions to society.
Astin’s journey in Hollywood is well-known, yet his dedication extends beyond acting. He has played a pivotal role in the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), serving on the National and Los Angeles Local Boards. His recent involvement on the 2023 TV/Theatrical Negotiating Committee was instrumental during a historic strike that resulted in significant advancements for union members, including protections addressing the impact of AI in the industry.
In addition to his entertainment career, Astin has displayed a commitment to civic engagement, having served under six cabinet secretaries in two presidential administrations and as a civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army. His position on the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation reflects his dedication to public service and community building.
AU President Jonathan Alger expressed excitement about Astin’s participation, stating that his career and advocacy embody what it means to be a lifelong learner and community leader. He emphasized how Astin, as a fellow Eagle, will inspire graduates by sharing his unique experiences and insights on fostering change in society.
Known for his emphasis on mental health, Astin has spoken at various institutions and organizations about leadership and well-being, continuing the legacy of his late mother, actress Patty Duke, who was a strong advocate for those dealing with mental health issues. He expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to address the graduates, stating, "My mission is to offer praise and appreciation for everyone’s accomplishments and to share thoughts on our path forward."
The commencement will feature not only Astin’s address but also speeches from fellow graduates who have made their marks in diverse fields. Students like Oreoluwa Erinfolami, who focused on biotechnology, and Ethan Cesar, who immersed himself in politics, will share their stories, highlighting the varied paths that American University students embark upon.
This year marks the 148th commencement of American University, continuing a tradition of inviting distinguished speakers. Previous notable speakers have included CNN's Abby Phillip and Dr. Vivek Murthy, Surgeon General of the United States.
American University prides itself on leveraging learning and community impact, dedicating itself to addressing pressing global issues through scholarship. The school encourages its students and alumni to challenge the norms and foster meaningful changes in society, aligning perfectly with Sean Astin’s own personal mission. As the university prepares for this momentous occasion, the fusion of academia and advocacy will undoubtedly resonate with the graduates, empowering them to champion their causes in the world beyond academia.
