The inaugural Takasimaya-Toshin Development Urban Culture Award has officially announced its winners, highlighting remarkable contributions to urban culture. The Grand Prize is awarded to Akira Yamaguchi for his work, 'Shuto', published by Kodansha in 2025.

Established by Takasimaya Co., Ltd. in collaboration with its subsidiary, Toshin Development, this award aims to honor outstanding literary works published in the prior year. A panel of six judges meticulously reviewed 94 nominated works recommended by around 100 committee members. The winning works will be showcased on a special website, which has been launched to celebrate the award announcement.

Notable works have received category-specific awards:
  • - Bazaar World Award: Keiko Arima for 'Ethnography of Demachi in Kyoto' (Seidosha, 2025).
  • - Oscar Award: Yuki Umekawa for 'Sociology of Garbage and Life' (Seikyuusha, 2025).
  • - Reflection and Heritage Award: Taku Osaka for 'Ainu in Modern Photography' (Shinshi, 2025).
  • - Silent Voices Award: Junya Utsumi and others for 'Jam Session - Ishibashi Foundation Collection' (Ishibashi Foundation Artizon Museum, 2025).
  • - Body and Urban Environments Award: Kimiyo Ogawa for 'Walking Slowly' (Igaku-shoin, 2025).
  • - Imagination for the City Award: Koichi Kato for 'Luxury in Architecture' (University of Tokyo Press, 2025).

Akira Yamaguchi expressed his surprise and gratitude upon learning about his award. Describing his feeling of apprehension regarding potential obligations tied to receiving the award, he found relief once he confirmed the involvement of renowned jury chair, Taro Igarashi. He highlighted his past collaborations with Takasimaya and acknowledged the value of the judges’ selection process, emphasizing that artworks often possess wisdom beyond their creators. He dedicated this honor to those who supported his journey in completing 'Shuto'.

1. Talk Event: A discussion featuring Yamaguchi, Igarashi, and Takanami will be held on July 19, 2026, in Tokyo. This online event requires prior registration.
2. Spin-off Project: Another creative discussion titled 'Gaku (Aerial) Talk' featuring Yamaguchi and others is scheduled for August 8, 2026.
3. Book Fair: Running from June 13 to July 31, 2026, at Maruzen Nihonbashi, this fair will showcase about 300 titles, including nominated and award-winning works. Visitors can also explore books selected by the judges focusing on urban culture.
4. Limited Edition Merchandise: Exclusive book covers will be available for those purchasing select works at the fair.
5. Limited Pamphlets: A small publication with jury evaluations and a selected reading list will be distributed at event locations and during the book fair.
