The 2025 Dog Name Rankings Released
Anicom Insurance Co., Ltd., headquartered in Shinjuku, Tokyo, and the top player in the pet insurance market, has recently published the "2025 Dog Name Rankings". This year’s ranking is based on approximately 150,000 newly insured dogs, emphasizing the growing interest in pet naming trends among pet owners. The ranking information stems from Anicom's popular pet insurance product, "Doubutsu Kenpo".
For the fifth consecutive year, "Mugi" has claimed the top spot in the overall rankings, showing remarkable consistency in pet naming preferences. Following closely are "Coco" and "Mocha", which maintain their positions from last year, securing second and third place, respectively. Another notable mention is "Late", which has progressively climbed the rankings from fifth place last year to fourth this time around. Meanwhile, "Komugi", which was eleventh last year, has successfully entered the Top 10, landing in tenth place.
In addition to the general rankings, Anicom also researched popular names derived from popular manga and gaming characters, as well as famous dogs. The results revealed the following names:

- - "Bond" also at 835th place (29 dogs)
- - "Punch" at 1,153rd place (19 dogs)
- - "Iggy" at 1,256th place (17 dogs)
- - "Pochita" at 1,663rd place (12 dogs)
- - "Chopper" at 4,493rd place (3 dogs)
- - "Tanjirou" at 5,738th place (2 dogs)
- - "Eevee" at 5,738th place (2 dogs)
- - "Dekopin" at 5,738th place (2 dogs)
- - "Anya" at 8,379th place (1 dog)
Separate Rankings by Gender
In the male dog category, "Leo" surged to first place from third last year, with its masculine appeal resonating well with pet owners. "Mugi" secured the second spot, while "Sora" followed closely in third. Interestingly, "Late", which improved its position in the overall rankings, advanced from tenth to fifth place in the male dog category.
For female dogs, the name "Coco" has risen to the top from the second place last year. "Mugi" remains popular, finishing second, while "Mocha", which occupied fourth place last year, continues to retain its appeal at third. Additionally, "Rin", which was ranked eleventh last year, has climbed the charts to ninth place, indicating its growing popularity among female dog names.
Notable Kanji Names
Regarding kanji names for male dogs, "Fuku" has retained its first-place position, while "Chachamaru" moved up to second from third last year. Other noteworthy names include "Kohaku", which ascended from eighth to fourth and "Mugi", climbing from tenth to eighth. Notably, "Ranmaru" has also made it into the Top 10 this year.
In the category of female names, "Hana" moved up to first place from third last year, with "Mugi" following closely in second as the former title holder. Just one name behind is "Rin", which edged its way into third place by a narrow margin.
Rankings from 11th to 30th Place
The rankings beyond the top ten have also unveiled emerging trends and varying preferences among pet owners, reflecting the dynamic nature of dog namings.
