Exciting New Flavors with a Traditional Twist
In an innovative collaboration, Origin Japan and Nagatanien have announced the launch of two new Toriten (fried chicken) flavors inspired by classic rice toppings. Starting August 2, 2025, consumers can enjoy the distinct tastes of "Toriten - Ochazuke Nori" and "Toriten - Umeboshi Ochazuke" at all Origin Kitchen and Origin Bento locations.
This partnership marks the first time these two renowned brands have joined forces to create a delicious dish that combines the essence of established home-cooked meals with contemporary convenience. Nagatanien has a rich history of delivering authentic taste in Japanese cuisine, while Origin Japan has been a staple in meal preparation and takeout, ensuring customers a helping hand in their daily cooking.
The Collaboration Journey
According to Hiroshi Ito, head of product development at Origin Japan, the idea for this collaboration arose from discussions within the company. Facing a hot summer, they wondered if they could develop a product that would entice customers to visit their stores. The conversation soon led to the notion of chilled food options, with the idea of chilled Ochazuke emerging as a striking alternative.
"Considering the iconic image of Ochazuke, Nagatanien was the first brand that came to mind," he said. After contacting them, the collaboration was quickly greenlit. With a variety of product ideas, including chilled versions, the development team decided to incorporate flavors from Nagatanien’s popular series: the beloved “Ochazuke Nori” that's especially favored during summer and the tangy “Umeboshi Ochazuke.”
The development team endeavored to create a newly intriguing experience, wanting the dish to remain relatable yet surprising. Combining the flavorful topping of Ochazuke Nori with the popular Toriten, they knew they were onto something unique. There was palpable excitement in the air as they brainstormed new flavor possibilities, and they collectively decided to launch not just one but two flavors simultaneously to maximize consumer delight.
Crafting the Perfect Balance
The road to product perfection was filled with culinary exploration. Both teams engaged tirelessly in refining the taste until they felt they had truly captured that classic "home taste" essence that Nagatanien is renowned for. Special attention was given to recreating the unique nuances of both types of Ochazuke. Challenges were plenty, particularly when it came to expressing the signature flavors and scents through their Toriten creations.
After numerous trials, the teams were thrilled to arrive at a final product that they were confident would resonate with diners. The resulting dish combines the crisp texture of fried chicken with the refreshing, savory notes of the Ochazuke toppings. Ito passionately expresses the hope that customers will find joy in enjoying Toriten in a unique format that draws on cherished flavors from Japanese comfort food history.
