In 1970, Dooner began his professional journey in the media division of Grey Advertising. However, it was his arrival at McCann-Erickson in 1984 that marked the beginning of a transformative era. During his time at McCann, he led major clients like Coca-Cola and Gillette and steadily climbed the ranks to become President in 1992 and CEO from 1994 to 2000. His leadership propelled McCann to new heights, addressing a changing landscape with innovative strategies.

One of his most revolutionary contributions was the establishment of McCann Worldgroup in 1997. One of his notable achievements included the acquisition of True North, incorporating well-known agencies FCB and Deutsch into the fold, thereby enriching the agency's portfolio.
