BAE Systems Accelerates Modernization of U.S. Army Combat Vehicles

In an impressive feat of engineering and innovation, BAE Systems has delivered two new concept Infantry Fighting Vehicles to the U.S. Army, marking a significant step forward in the Army's modernization efforts. This delivery aligns with the Army's Transformation in Contact (TiC) 2.0 initiative and comes as the demand for advanced combat capabilities grows in an increasingly complex battlefield environment.

The development of these Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV) 30mms was financed through a robust internal research and development investment of $17 million by BAE Systems. The company demonstrated exceptional speed and efficiency, completing this project within just six months—a remarkable feat given the complexities involved in military vehicle manufacturing. “Our mission was speed and innovation, and we delivered beyond expectations,” stated Bill Sheehy, vice president of BAE Systems’ Ground Maneuver Futures.

The AMPV 30s are designed on a proven chassis that emphasizes not only firepower but also survivability and connectivity. They incorporate the KONGSBERG Medium Caliber Turret (MCT), a compact remote turret system that is currently in production for the U.S. Marine Corps’ Amphibious Combat Vehicle. This turret will provide enhanced firepower and operational flexibility on the modern battlefield.

Beyond the weaponry, the AMPV 30s are equipped with advanced systems aimed at ensuring troop safety and mission success. Among their features are counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS) designed to neutralize drone threats, as well as a cross-platform target handoff system that allows for multiple vehicles to connect and synchronize target data. Additionally, the vehicle's 360-degree situational awareness cameras enable Soldiers to maintain a clear picture of their surroundings without compromising their safety inside the vehicle.

The modular and open architecture of the AMPV chassis facilitates the integration of various mission equipment packages, making it adaptable to over 30 different turret systems. This flexibility reflects BAE Systems' commitment to meeting the ever-changing needs of the Army’s modernization agenda. Over the past two years, the company has invested significantly in the development of turreted AMPV prototypes, totaling eight distinct models to address the Army's evolving requirements effectively.

The U.S. Army has already begun rigorous field evaluations of the AMPV 30s, including live fire tests, to verify the platform's capabilities and readiness for deployment. The feedback from these evaluations will inform future enhancements and ensure that the Soldiers have the tools they need to maintain an advantage in combat.
