Exploring Key Strategies for Successful Land-Based Aquaculture and Future Developments

JPI Seminar on Land-Based Aquaculture

On April 13, 2026, JPI (Japan Planning Institute) will host a seminar featuring Tomoki Togawa, the Executive Officer in charge of Aquaculture Development at Nichimo Co., Ltd. The seminar will explore the crucial strategies for succeeding in land-based aquaculture, addressing the challenges faced, and discussing future strategies for development.

Nichimo boasts a rich history in aquaculture, beginning with its pioneering salmon farming in Miyagi Prefecture over 45 years ago. Despite its successes, the company has encountered challenges in recent years due to rising seawater temperatures, which have led to instability in farming durations and production levels, not only for salmon but also for cultivated fish like yellowtail and sea bream in western Japan.

Recognizing these hurdles, Nichimo shifted its focus to land-based aquaculture in 2020, collaborating with Kyushu Electric Power and establishing the Fish Farm Mirai LLC, which led to the launch of Mirai Salmon sales in 2023. The initiative has achieved stable production and received positive feedback from clients. This seminar promises to provide invaluable insights into the significance, challenges, and successful factors of land-based aquaculture, drawing from Nichimo’s extensive experience, including past failures.
