In an exciting announcement for photography enthusiasts, Seigensha has revealed that the historical and celebrated photobook, 'Ikiteiru' by renowned photographer Masafumi Sanai, will make its long-awaited return in a new edition titled 'Fukkan Ikiteiru' (Reprint Ikiteiru) in September 2026. Originally published in April 1997, 'Ikiteiru' was met with great enthusiasm, as it showcased a unique array of photographs that defied conventional expectations, not falling into the categories of decisive moments or personal photography. The impact was profound, marking the emergence of a notable new talent in the photography scene and influencing the generations of photographers that followed, ultimately establishing itself as a significant event in the history of photography.
Despite multiple printings over the years, the original edition faced a setback when the paper used for the book went out of production, making further reprints impossible after the last one in 2007. With its accessibility dwindling, the absence of 'Ikiteiru' has been felt in the photographic community.
However, in celebration of Seigensha's 30th anniversary in October 2025, a special project was initiated to revive this beloved book as a memorial effort. Readers were encouraged to share their requests for reprints, resulting in an overwhelming response advocating for the return of 'Ikiteiru', which ultimately led to its revival.
To ensure the quality of the new edition, experienced book designer Satoshi Machiguchi, who originally designed 'Ikiteiru', oversaw the project. After numerous printing tests to select a replacement paper that would do justice to the original’s aesthetic, a new paper was finally chosen. The printing process adhered to traditional methods, utilizing film plates and oil-based inks to maintain the integrity of the original production. While the cover design received a modern update to reflect its new stature, the essence of the book remains deeply rooted in its origin.
This revised edition promises to add a new chapter to the photographic history that has been nearly three decades in the making, with 'Ikiteiru' now set to resonate with both nostalgic readers and a fresh audience.
Masafumi Sanai expressed his sentiments regarding the reprint, stating, 'The photographs are alive, blooming without comprehension, encapsulating moments that transformed into personal reflections.' He emphasized the transformation throughout the printing process as the essence of 'Ikiteiru' evolved closer to completion, experiencing joy in the journey of this project. 'Fukkan Ikiteiru' is still a work in progress!'
The book features detailed art direction by Satoshi Machiguchi and will weigh in at 315mm x 280mm with a total of 64 pages. Priced at 5,280 yen (4,800 yen excluding tax), the ISBN for the new edition is 978-4-86831-064-8 C0072.
This return of 'Ikiteiru' promises to reignite discussions around its groundbreaking impact and the evolution of photography in Japan, offering both a nostalgic and contemporary experience. Photography aficionados should mark their calendars for this highly anticipated release in September 2026, as it not only signifies a revival of a classic but also a celebration of Seigensha's legacy in the world of art publishing.
