UL Research Institutes (ULRI) has announced the appointment of Dr. Russell "Rusty" Thomas as the new executive director and vice president of Chemical Insights, effective June 30, 2025. Located in Marietta, GA, this nonprofit research organization is dedicated to exploring environmental exposures and their effects on human health.
Dr. Thomas holds a wealth of expertise in toxicology and exposure science, which are pivotal areas for the research that Chemical Insights conducts. Dr. Chris Cramer, ULRI's Chief Research Officer, emphasized the importance of Thomas's background, stating that his leadership is expected to broaden ULRI’s research scope and advance its mission to create a safer world.
Before joining ULRI, Dr. Thomas served as the director of the Center for Computational Toxicology and Exposure at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). His experience extends to the biopharmaceutical sector, where he engaged in bioinformatics, genomics research, and high-throughput screening. Notably, he has also worked in senior management roles within nonprofit research institutes, showcasing a diverse professional background that aligns with the current objectives of Chemical Insights.
Dr. Thomas's academic credentials are impressive. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Tabor College, followed by a Master of Science in radioecology and health physics and a Ph.D. in environmental health and toxicology from Colorado State University. His multifaceted background preps him well to tackle the challenges inherent in promoting public health through informed research.
In addressing his new role, Dr. Thomas expressed enthusiasm about the potential to expand Chemical Insights' efforts in safeguarding human health against harmful chemical exposures. "The current research initiatives are already impactful, and I believe we can enhance our contributions significantly to fulfill the institute’s mission," he stated.
