Mizuki Aida Percussion Recital 2025
Scheduled for October 3, 2025, at the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, the Mizuki Aida Percussion Recital promises to be an unforgettable night celebrating the brilliance of one of Japan's most innovative percussionists and composers. Known as the "premiere magician," Aida has an impressive portfolio with over 300 premieres and has composed more than 100 pieces spanning orchestral works to songs, which have gained international recognition, including broadcasts by NHK and Lithuania's national radio.
A Night Dedicated to the Compositions of Yoshio Yamamura
This recital will commemorate the late composer Yoshio Yamamura, who passed away at the young age of 46, leaving behind only 16 masterpieces. Yamamura's works challenged the contemporary music scene dominated by mathematical expressions, introducing the importance of emotional and personal music that speaks directly to the audience's hearts. His dramatic life and compelling compositions continue to inspire many today.
One of his most notable pieces, "Shooting Stars," made its debut at the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan in 1969, captivating audiences with its passionate allure. This performance will feature guest artists, including composer and pianist Toshirou Nakagawa, internationally acclaimed violinist Ayane Kawamura, and masterful marimba and timpani player Reina Iwami, all of whom will contribute significantly to the emotional depth of the pieces.
In response to Yamamura's "Shooting Stars," Mizuki Aida has composed a new piece titled "Drunken Landscape," inspired by the novel of the same name by Yumiko Kurahashi. This piece will explore the communication between this world and the other side through music. Additionally, there will be a highly anticipated revival of Yamamura's deeply emotional piece, "Ahania."
Showcasing Works by Renowned Japanese Composers
The concert will also present works commissioned from two iconic Japanese composers, Joji Yuasa and Yoshio Mamiya, both of whom were born and died in the same year. Despite their vastly different styles and approaches to music, their creations have influenced each other throughout their careers. Aida commissioned Yuasa's piece for vibraphone in 2015 and Mamiya's work in 2017, and their pieces will be juxtaposed in this performance, revealing their thoughtful philosophies and extraordinary musical expressions.
A Gathering of Diverse International Talents
An exciting new composition by Piyawat Loiwadpraserth, the recently appointed head of the Faculty of Music at Mahidol University in Thailand, will also be featured. His vibrant and fresh style promises to add a new dimension to the recital. American composer Jean Patrick Busaingran will showcase his deep love for Japan through his work, while Mamoru Fujieda will explore the theme of "plant patterns" in his unique sound world.
These compositions have been written exclusively for Aida, showcasing the exceptional talents of composers like Shion Sahara, whose piece "Petorunkamuy" beautifully integrates Ainu language narration. At 91 years old, Shukou Mizuno continues to capture the interplay of musical generations in his piece "Vibraphone Solo 2021."
