Organizations Unite to Enhance Community Resilience Through Red Cross Support

Strengthening Community Resilience Through the American Red Cross

September marks National Preparedness Month, reminding us of the importance of readiness in the face of disaster. This year, the American Red Cross has launched an initiative recognizing over 170 organizations and corporations that play pivotal roles in disaster preparedness and recovery. Through programs like the Mission Leader Program, the Annual Disaster Giving Program (ADGP), and the Disaster Responder Program, these organizations contribute both financial support and in-kind resources.

In the wake of severe climatic events over the past year, including tumultuous storms, wildfires, and floods, the need for effective disaster response is greater than ever. Red Cross volunteers, numbering over 14,000 in 2026 alone, are actively engaged in providing crucial support to affected communities nationwide. With climate-related disasters becoming increasingly common, families are more reliant on the Red Cross for immediate and long-term relief.

The Role of Key Partnerships

The collaborative efforts facilitated by members of the Mission Leader, ADGP, and Disaster Responder programs empower the Red Cross to efficiently respond to around 60,000 disasters annually, both significant and minor. These organizational partners ensure that the Red Cross can act swiftly, prepositioning vital supplies, training volunteers, and ensuring readiness before crises strike. Cliff Holtz, the president and CEO of the American Red Cross, emphasizes the importance of these contributions, stating, "In a year when communities continue to face one crisis after another, our program members help make it possible for the Red Cross to be there from the very first moments."

Responding to Major Disasters

In 2026 alone, the U.S. has already faced a series of devastating disasters, including super typhoons, floods, tornado outbreaks, and wildfires. This surge in disasters has reinforced the vital nature of preparation and response strategies. Despite the increase in large-scale emergencies, the most prevalent disaster type remains home fires. The Red Cross relies on support from its program members to aid families in preparing and responding to such common yet often devastating incidents.

Among the key initiatives is the Home Fire Campaign, which has succeeded in saving over 2,690 lives since its inception in October 2014. The campaign focuses on educating people about the risks of home fires and providing essential support to prepare for emergencies.

Preparing for the Unexpected

National Preparedness Month serves as a timely reminder for individuals and families to take proactive measures in safeguarding themselves and their loved ones. Key steps include creating safety plans, gathering essential supplies, and establishing communication channels should an emergency arise. To aid in these preparations, the American Red Cross encourages people to visit redcross.org/prepare to access valuable resources, including the free Red Cross Emergency app.

A Grateful Acknowledgment

The American Red Cross extends its heartfelt gratitude to program members for their generous support. Notable Mission Leaders include companies such as Amazon, American Airlines, and The Coca-Cola Foundation. Furthermore, ADGP Leaders, such as Anheuser-Busch Foundation and MasterCard, play crucial roles in supporting disaster readiness and relief efforts.

As we observe National Preparedness Month, let us all take a moment to reflect on the importance of community resilience and acknowledge the organizations that tirelessly work alongside the Red Cross to make our nation a safer and more prepared place for everyone.
