Brock USA's Commitment to Sustainability: Innovations for Earth Day and Beyond

Brock USA's Commitment to Full Lifecycle Sustainability

This Earth Day, Brock USA has renewed its commitment to sustainability by unveiling a comprehensive full lifecycle approach to synthetic turf systems. This initiative emphasizes material innovation, long-term reuse, and responsible end-of-life recycling—a crucial step toward reducing the environmental impact of the sports industry.

At the forefront of this sustainability initiative is BrockFILL, a plant-based infill that has recently received the prestigious Cradle to Cradle Certified® Material Health Gold designation. This certification is recognized globally as one of the most rigorous standards for material health and environmental sustainability. BrockFILL is not only among the first of its kind to achieve this certification, but it is also the first product in the sports and hobby category to receive such an honor, marking a significant milestone in sustainable manufacturing practices.

Brock USA's President, Ronnie Pascale, stated, “For more than a decade, we've worked alongside MBDC to push the boundaries of safer, more sustainable materials.” This ongoing partnership reflects a deep commitment to transparency in sourcing and a dedication to designing products that prioritize both athlete safety and environmental well-being. Beyond the infill, the company’s range of Cradle to Cradle Certified shock pads plays a crucial role in enhancing player safety by reducing impact forces while ensuring consistent performance in the field.

The innovative characteristics of BrockFILL meet stringent chemical safety standards, with every ingredient rated optimal for material health. It is designed to comply with PFAS regulations and other restricted substance standards, making it a sustainable alternative to traditional crumb rubber. In fact, BrockFILL contributes to cooler performance on synthetic turf and is currently installed in over 1,000 playing fields across North America, helping many local schools and sports organizations lower their environmental footprint without sacrificing performance.

Brock USA's sustainability efforts extend beyond the material used in turf systems; they focus heavily on longevity and the potential for reuse. Over 160 fields in North America have successfully replaced their synthetic turf while retaining their original Brock shock pads. These pads play a vital role, absorb impact, and provide a more consistent playing experience. By reducing stress on athletes' bodies, this approach not only supports safer play but also extends the lifespan of the synthetic turf compared to alternatives installed on stone bases. Pascale emphasizes, “One of the most environmentally responsible products is the one you don’t have to replace.”

To address the end-of-life phase of synthetic turf systems, Brock USA acknowledges the imperative need for responsible recycling solutions. Turf Recyclers USA, based in Rockland, Massachusetts, is making strides in closing the loop by providing scalable recycling processes for synthetic turf. As the first facility in the U.S. capable of mechanically recycling entire synthetic turf systems, Turf Recyclers operates under a comprehensive model that separates infill, extracts recyclable materials, and converts the recovered polyethylene into pellets for reuse in the recycled plastics market. Thus far, they have diverted approximately 7 million pounds of synthetic turf materials from landfills, showcasing a strong commitment to zero-waste initiatives.

“With the ever-growing demand for sustainable sports infrastructure, partnerships and innovative solutions are essential,” added Pascale. “The future of our industry hinges on responsible end-of-life pathways.”

Brock USA continues to set the standard for sustainability in synthetic turf systems, from safer materials and enhanced product lifespans to responsible recycling processes. This Earth Day—and every day—Brock USA remains steadfast in its mission to Protect the Player. Protect the Planet.
