Immersive Yokai Digital Art Museum Debuts in Kyushu This July 2026

The Unveiling of the "Yokai Exhibition KAGOSHIMA"

Come summer 2026, the captivating world of Yokai will arrive in Kyushu, with the grand opening of the "Yokai Exhibition KAGOSHIMA - Imagination of Japan" on July 3. This one-of-a-kind immersive digital art museum invites visitors of all ages to both enjoy and learn about the enchanting realm of Japanese folklore. Located at the Kagoshima Prefectural Museum of History and Art, this extraordinary event runs until August 31.

The exhibition showcases stunning artworks featuring Yokai created by various artists from Japan’s Edo and Meiji periods. Visitors will encounter iconic motifs such as the "Hyakki Yagyō" (Night Parade of One Hundred Demons), "Hyakumonogatari" (One Hundred Tales), and well-known creatures like Kappa, Tengu, and Tsukumogami. Through advanced technologies, including 3D CGI, projection mapping, and holographic displays, these traditional illustrations come to life in a dynamic and engaging manner.

Drawing inspiration from Japan's rich myths and legends, the Yokai have captured the fascination of people globally for generations. This exhibition not only recreates their whimsical and humorous appearances but also dives into the cultural significance of Yokai in modern pop culture, connecting historical narratives to today's society. Collaborations with institutions like the Nishio City Iwase Library and the Yokai Art Museum in Shodoshima provide deeper insights into the history of Yokai art and folklore.

Already thrilling audiences in Nagoya and Tokyo, where it attracted over 200,000 visitors, the exhibition in Kagoshima promises to be a memorable experience.
