On September 23, 2026, Jumonji Gakuen Women's University will hold an exciting hands-on workshop titled "Sugar Magic Experiment Room" at the science experience facility IMAGINUS in Suginami, Tokyo. This workshop targets children aged 4 and up and their families, providing a unique opportunity to delve into the world of sugar, a common yet fascinating ingredient in our daily lives.

A Scientific Journey into the World of Sugar

The Sugar Magic Experiment Room is designed to make learning about food both fun and educational. Through various engaging activities, participants will discover the science behind sugar, including observational studies using microscopes, cooking, and tasting delicious experiments. Led by students from the university’s Department of Food and Nutrition, the workshop aims to inspire kids by fostering a sense of curiosity about food and enjoying the pleasures of eating.

Highlights of the Workshop

1. Taste Testing & Microscope Observation: Participants will compare different types of sugar by observing their appearances and crystal formations under the microscope while discussing how these differences affect sweetness perception.

2. Baking Cookies with Sugar Variations: Attendees will bake cookies using different types of sugar and note how the choice of sugar alters the cookies' color and texture. This hands-on experience will allow them to experiment in real-time.

3. Creating Separated Drinks: Focusing on sugar’s impact on liquid density, participants will create visually appealing two-layer drinks. This activity emphasizes the relationship between sugar concentration and liquid weight.

Although primarily aimed at younger children, the workshop is designed to be enjoyable for adults as well. Families and friends are encouraged to join in on the fun and learning.

• - Target Audience: Open to children aged 4 and older (With elementary students being the primary focus; parents must accompany children in 2nd grade and under.)
• - Capacity: 12 participants per session (First-come, first-served, registration required; accompanying adults are not counted in the participant limit.)
• - Participation Fee: 2,000 yen (Cash only, to be paid at the venue)
• - Instructors: Students from the Department of Food and Nutrition at Jumonji Gakuen Women's University.
• - Tasting: Participants will get to taste cookies and drinks made during the workshop, which may contain egg, milk, and wheat. Also, some drinks might include orange. Please note that individual allergy accommodations won't be provided.

About IMAGINUS

Opened in October 2023, IMAGINUS is a science experience facility located at the site of the former Sugiyama Daiyon Elementary School. It offers over 20 different events each month, from hands-on workshops suitable for kids as young as 4 to engaging science shows performed by professional actors. IMAGINUS presents science as a fun and engaging subject, transforming the question of “Why?” into the realization of “Oh!”, inviting all visitors to explore science with curiosity and joy.
