A Celebration of 140 Years: PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital
PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital, a cornerstone of healthcare in Los Angeles, recently celebrated 140 years dedicated to high-quality and compassionate patient care. Founded in November 1885 by Sister Mary Wood, the hospital has undergone significant transformations, evolving from a modest nine-bed facility into a leading healthcare institution recognized for its commitment to innovation and patient services.
Historical Growth and Achievements
Over the years, the hospital has been at the forefront of medical advancements, adapting to the evolving healthcare landscape in Downtown Los Angeles. Notably, in 1959, it conducted its first open-heart surgery, a pioneering step for the facility. A couple of years later, in 1961, the hospital became one of only four hospitals in the country to establish an Intensive Care Unit, showcasing its emphasis on advanced patient care. Moreover, in 1986, it made a significant mark on medical history by achieving the nation's first live birth from a frozen embryo.
The journey of expansion continued throughout the decades, with a pivotal moment occurring in 1913 when Good Samaritan Hospital merged with Columbia Hospital. This merger was followed by several relocations and updates, including the completion of new facilities in 1927 and a significant expansion in 1953 to accommodate over 400 patients. The latest iteration of the hospital facility opened in 1976, supplemented by further expansions, including the Medical Office Building in 1981 and the Wilshire Medical Office Building in 2018.
Joining Forces for Better Care
In 2019, PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital became part of the PIH Health network, a nonprofit healthcare organization that encompasses multiple hospitals and outpatient services across Southern California. This integration allowed PIH Health to elevate its service to the community, boasting a workforce of over 7,100 employees, three hospitals, and 31 outpatient clinics. With 1,130 licensed beds, the network significantly augments healthcare access in the region.
Today, the hospital accommodates 408 beds and caters to more than 48,000 patients annually, delivering a wealth of medical services ranging from heart care, women's health, breast care, and orthopedic surgery, to oncology and digestive diseases. Over 1,400 babies are born at the hospital each year, solidifying its role as a vital part of the community.
A Legacy of Compassionate Care
The mission of PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital continues to focus on providing patient-centered care. Irena Zuanic, Chief Nursing Officer, emphasized the hospital's legacy, stating, "Generations of Angelenos have relied on the hospital for life-saving treatments, specialized care, and emergency services. We look forward to building on that legacy and continuing to make a positive impact for even more generations to come."
As the hospital looks to the future, it remains committed to maintaining its excellence in patient care, ensuring that it meets the needs of a growing, diverse population. The dedication to compassionate healthcare, coupled with the integration of technological advancements, ensures that PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital remains a pillar of the Los Angeles medical community.
