Takashimaya's Commitment to Sustainability
In a significant move towards combating climate change, Takashimaya Co., Ltd. has announced its achievement of transitioning to 100% renewable energy across its entire Tamagawa Takashimaya S.C. facility. The company, headquartered in Osaka under the leadership of President Yoshirou Murata, along with its subsidiary, Tohshin Development Co., Ltd., is fervently working to accelerate decarbonization initiatives as part of their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) management strategy.
The Milestone Achievement
This momentous accomplishment marks a pivotal step in Takashimaya’s commitment to a sustainable future. With the influence of climate change on social-economic activities becoming more severe annually, the company has intensified its decarbonization efforts by committing to the “RE100” international initiative, aimed at sourcing 100% renewable energy for business operations by 2025. This goal will see Takashimaya switching to a near-total renewable energy model by March 2025 for three additional facilities, including the Nagareyama Otaka no Mori S.C. and the Yokohama Logistics Center.
Achieving 100% renewable energy in Tamagawa Takashimaya S.C. alone is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 15,000 tons annually. Started with individual sites since 2019, the energy transition marks the culmination of Takashimaya’s sustainability efforts.
Expansion of Renewable Energy Usage
In addition to the recent advancements at Tamagawa, the flagship Nihonbashi Takashimaya S.C. has also signed new Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to procure off-site renewable energy. This arrangement will ensure the company can secure stable access to renewable energy while contributing to the establishment of new renewable power plants, thus enhancing the overall supply of green energy.
Emphasizing Community Engagement
Takashimaya aims to play a pivotal role in creating a sustainable society where everyone can thrive. By merging social responsibility with business growth, the company emphasizes the necessity of addressing social issues alongside economic development. They continue to assess what further actions can be taken to reduce energy consumption while engaging with local communities to promote sustainable urban development.
With ongoing climate challenges evidenced by last summer's record high temperatures and droughts, the urgency of Takashimaya's initiatives cannot be overstated. The company’s commitment to ESG management ensures it recognizes the importance of the environment as a critical stakeholder.
Looking Ahead
As Takashimaya charts a course for a sustainable future, they invite customers, community members, and business partners to join them in their pursuit of a decarbonized society. The recent efforts at both Tamagawa and Nihonbashi exemplify Takashimaya's leadership in environmental stewardship.
By fostering collaborations and maintaining transparency around their sustainability practices, Takashimaya hopes to further enhance their contributions towards achieving a greener world. For more detailed information regarding the off-site PPA and other eco-friendly initiatives, the company encourages stakeholders to review their press releases and corporate responsibility reports.
