This fall, the Army National Guard is set to reignite excitement across high schools nationwide with the return of Disasterville, an innovative mixed-reality experience designed to immerse students in disaster response missions. Following a successful inaugural tour in the spring of 2026, which touched over 2,000 students, Disasterville aims to equip young minds with essential skills and insights about disaster preparedness and response.

A Learning Adventure

Disasterville transforms high school gymnasiums into dynamic virtual environments where students will engage in interactive simulations addressing common emergencies like wildfires, floods, and earthquakes. Using state-of-the-art virtual reality headsets, participants step into the shoes of National Guard Soldiers, experiencing first-hand the challenges faced during actual disaster response operations.

Active Learning Through Simulations

Students are grouped into teams of five, embarking on three distinct missions that mirror real-life emergency scenarios. As they navigate through each mission, they will engage in activities that enhance communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills. Each mission lasts about ten minutes and poses unique challenges:

1. Wildfire Response: Teams work together to suppress wildfires threatening properties. They tackle smaller fires while uniting to combat larger outbreaks and rescuing animals in peril, all while skillfully avoiding obstacles like falling debris.

2. Flood Rescue: After a massive hurricane, students use Zodiacs equipped with headlamps to locate and evacuate civilians from submerged streets, all while maneuvering around hazardous wildlife and debris.

3. Earthquake Recovery: In the wake of a destructive earthquake, participants will handle a derailed train carrying hazardous materials, using the jaws of life to free trapped civilians amidst a race against time.

Combining augmented reality with realistic graphics, the immersive experience utilizes multiplayer local-network tracking, enabling students to interact with their surroundings and one another seamlessly. The experience eliminates traditional game controllers, allowing for a more natural engagement using innovative hand-tracking technology. Students can manipulate in-game props and tools such as hoses, chainsaws, and rescue equipment, enhancing both learning and fun.
