Pur's Innovative Research on Rishiri Kelp Extract: New Findings for Hair Care Products

Innovative Study on Rishiri Kelp Extract

In a groundbreaking collaboration with Kyushu University, Pur Inc. has made significant strides in understanding the properties of its proprietary ingredient, Rishiri Kelp Extract. This research, conducted between January and June 2025, aimed to explore the effects of this unique ingredient on cellular health, scalp condition, and hair growth.

Understanding Rishiri Kelp

Rishiri kelp is sourced from the waters surrounding Rishiri Island in Hokkaido, Japan. The kelp grows in nutrient-rich waters, filtrated through volcanic rock, which endows it with a rich mineral profile believed to benefit skin and hair health. Previous studies led by Associate Professor Kuniyoshi Shimizu at Kyushu University had already identified its antioxidant properties through the ORAC method, opening doors to further exploring its capabilities.

Focus of the Research

The joint research team specifically investigated three key characteristics of Rishiri Kelp Extract: 1) enhancement of hyaluronic acid production, 2) protection against UVA-induced damage to fibroblasts, and 3) promotion of hair follicle cell proliferation. Each of these aspects plays a critical role in maintaining healthy skin and hair.

1. Hyaluronic Acid Production Enhancement

Hyaluronic acid is crucial for skin hydration and elasticity, primarily produced by fibroblasts. The researchers conducted a 72-hour in vitro study, introducing Rishiri Kelp Extract to human fibroblasts and measuring the resultant levels of hyaluronic acid in the culture medium. The results demonstrated that fibroblasts treated with the extract showed increased cell counts and a significant rise in hyaluronic acid production compared to the control group. This suggests that Rishiri Kelp Extract may enhance skin moisturization and contribute positively to skin health.

2. UVA Protection Effect Test

While moderate UV exposure can have beneficial effects, excessive exposure can lead to various skin issues such as pigmentation, roughness, and premature aging. To assess how Rishiri Kelp Extract protects fibroblasts from UV damage, researchers exposed treated cells to UVA radiation. After 24 hours, they measured cell viability using the MTT assay. Findings indicated that the cells treated with Rishiri Kelp Extract exhibited a more stable survival rate under UVA exposure compared to untreated cells, suggesting a protective effect against UV-induced fibroblast damage.

3. Activation of Hair Follicle Cells

Hair growth is largely regulated by hair follicle (dermal papilla) cells. These cells issue signals to hair matrix cells, prompting their proliferation, essential for hair development. The study evaluated the impact of Rishiri Kelp Extract on the viability of dermal papilla cells, again utilizing the MTT assay. The results suggested increased cell viability with the extract, indicating a positive impact on hair growth cellular mechanisms.

Future Prospects

With these promising findings, Pur Inc. aims to further capitalize on Rishiri Kelp Extract in developing hair care products specifically targeting gray hair and other hair concerns. The company also envisions expanding the application of this innovative ingredient beyond hair care, exploring its potential benefits for skincare and overall wellness.

Pur Inc. remains committed to its motto of "Effective Clean Beauty," emphasizing the use of natural ingredients and additives-free formulations. As research progresses, consumers can look forward to enhanced products designed to meet their beauty and health needs.
