New Bakery Cafe Opening in Biwako Cultural Park
In a delightful announcement for residents and visitors alike, the renowned Bakery Cafe "Bread and Espresso" will have its grand opening at Shiga Prefecture's Biwako Cultural Park on June 21, 2026. This will mark the cafe's inaugural location in the Shiga region, adding to its impressive portfolio of 72 locations both domestically and internationally managed by the company Hito to Hito.
Project Overview
The opening of two new cafes within the park, "Bread and Espresso at Biwako Cultural Park" and "Yusai-an", is a collaborative effort between Hito to Hito and Biwako Cultural Park's Yuyu Partners, with Seibu Zoen Co., Ltd. serving as the lead entity. Utilizing the Park-PFI system, this partnership aims to enhance the culinary experience at Biwako Cultural Park and stimulate the local economy.
Hito to Hito formed an exclusive partnership with HIS in 2022, focusing on international licensing opportunities and promoting a local ownership program dubbed the "47 Prefectures Local Bread Project." Their mission is to connect the charm of the Bakery Cafe with local culture, thereby invigorating the economy, society, and cultural initiatives.
By renovating two dining spaces within the park, this project aims to boost local engagement and promote the beauty of food culture, ultimately facilitating regional development.
Enhancing Visitor Experience
Through this collaboration, visitors to the park will enjoy easy access to high-quality pastries and coffee, enhancing their overall experience. The introduction of these cafes is expected to attract visitors who may have previously overlooked the park, diversifying and energizing its usage.
About Biwako Cultural Park
Established as a designated area in the 1979 Biwako Cultural Park City Plan, the park is recognized as a cultural hub for art and education in Shiga Prefecture. It combines natural landscapes with cultural facilities, including art museums, libraries, and traditional Japanese gardens, promoting interaction between residents and the environment.
Moreover, it features a rich array of natural forestry, contributing to the preservation and restoration of surrounding green spaces, providing a recreational area suitable for community activities and cultural engagement.
The Newly Opened Cafes
"Bread and Espresso at Biwako Cultural Park" has transformed an existing cafe into a bakery with the concept of a "Lunch Box in the Grass." This innovative space leverages the park's expansive lawns, blending architectural design with nature, allowing visitors to enjoy a taste of the outdoors.
On the other hand, "Yusai-an" reimagines an old teahouse as a modern cafe, embodying the concept of a "stone garden space connected to the outside." The design respects the historical character of the facility, fostering a seamless connection between the cafe's interior and the lovely gardens beyond, providing a tranquil setting for tea enjoyment amid nature.
Exclusive Menu Items
Both cafes will serve exclusive menu items that highlight local flavors. A standout dish is the homemade Omi beef curry toast—known as "Moo"—featuring rich bread made with ample butter and topped with a 100% Omi beef curry, simmered gradually with seven spices and tomatoes. It is complemented with freshly grated Parmigiano and a poached egg, providing a luxurious flavor experience.
In addition, visitors can look forward to the unique red konjac product sourced from local specialties, as well as ambitious curry breads, filled to the brim with savory Omi beef curry spiced to perfection.
