Exploring Generation Z's Technology Mindset



In a collaboration between Loyalty Marketing Co., Ltd. and the Tokyo FM radio program "Manabu & Watanabe's #BizTopi", a survey was conducted targeting individuals aged 15 to 29. The results, gathered from April 1 to 4, 2025, shed light on Generation Z's perceptions of technology, particularly in relation to generative AI and its implications for the future.

1. Generative AI Adoption


The survey uncovered that nearly half of Generation Z participants, specifically 50%, are using generative AI tools such as ChatGPT and image generation AI. The frequency of use revealed that 7.5% access these tools almost daily, while 15.8% use them several times a week, and 27.9% do so occasionally. Notably, 48.8% reported no experience with these technologies. Despite this, interest in cutting-edge technology remains relatively low, with about 60% indicating no particular interest, while 24.5% showed a keen interest in AI and machine learning.

2. Optimism vs. Anxiety Towards Technology


When asked about their sentiments regarding technological advancement, 57.7% expressed optimism, surpassing the 42.3% who felt anxious. Among respondents, 38% showed mild optimism, while 19.7% were very optimistic. Regarding the future societal impacts of AI, 49.2% believe it will have a positive effect.

3. Concerns Over Job Replacement


The apprehension surrounding AI’s potential to replace human jobs was significant, with over 80% of respondents expressing some level of concern. Specifically, 44.7% felt that while AI may be acceptable for certain jobs, the overall replacement of human roles is concerning. Meanwhile, only 14.9% welcomed the idea, viewing it as a means of increasing convenience.

4. Mobility Technology Interest


About 40% stated they would like to utilize new mobility technologies, such as flying cars and self-driving vehicles, if given the opportunity. Interest also extended to technologies that address environmental issues, with 37.8% expressing a moderate level of expectation, leading to a total of 53.1% who are hopeful about these advancements.

5. Reception of the Osak-Kansai Expo


Interestingly, nearly half of the respondents (48.5%) mentioned they have no plans to attend the Osaka-Kansai Expo, despite a noteworthy 38.8% expressing interest. This event is anticipated to showcase the latest advancements including innovations in mobility and technology.

Expert Commentary


Maki Mabuchi, an economic analyst, interprets the findings as indicating a significant divide in technological literacy among Generation Z. While a promising portion actively engages with generative AI, almost 60% lack interest in advanced technologies. This discrepancy poses risks for future workforce dynamics, particularly regarding the growing digital gender gap where male interest levels (31.4%) surpass those of females (18.1%).

Moreover, Hiromi Watanabe, a consumption economy analyst, emphasizes the practical implications of these findings in real-world business settings. The disparity in AI adoption and usage among business professionals suggests challenges ahead in navigating technological changes.
