HUAWEI XMAGE Awards 2024: Celebrating Inspiring Photography From Around the Globe

HUAWEI XMAGE Awards 2024: Celebrating Creativity in Mobile Photography

On November 27, 2024, the HUAWEI XMAGE Awards 2024 took place at the Sea World Culture and Art Center in Shenzhen, China, marking a significant celebration of creativity and talent in mobile photography. This annual event attracted a diverse crowd of photographers, media representatives, and enthusiasts, all gathered to applaud the winners of this prestigious competition.

The awards are part of a larger initiative that has been ongoing since 2017, fostering a global community of over 170 countries and garnering nearly 5 million submissions to date. This year alone, the competition received over 650,000 entries from 86 countries during its 131-day period. Notably, countries like Malaysia, Turkey, the Philippines, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia contributed hugely to the submissions alongside China. The most popular devices used for submissions were the HUAWEI Pura 70 Series, P60 Series, P40 Series, and Mate 60 Series.

During the ceremony, attendees were encouraged by He Gang, the CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, who expressed heartfelt congratulations to the winners and gratitude towards HUAWEI XMAGE users. He emphasized the platform’s role in transcending mere documentation, serving as a bridge for emotional communication among individuals.

Celebrating the Winners

The ceremony announced 66 winners, comprising three Grand Prix recipients, 18 category winners, and numerous runners-up. The three main winners, Chen Yong from China, Justin Mendoza from the Philippines, and Kinga Choińska from Poland, each received a cash prize of $10,000 from the Huawei Creation Fund. Their entries, characterized by imaginative portrayals of life, resonated deeply with viewers, showcasing authentic human stories and emotions.

A key comment from the jury noted the profound symbolism present in the winning photographs. Chen Xiaobo, a vice president of the China Photographers Association, highlighted one powerful image that embodies strength, beauty, and vitality, symbolizing a universal message: “Each of us has the power to make the world better.”

The exhibition accompanying the awards showcased over 300 exemplary works divided into seven thematic sections, including “Moments,” “Faces,” and “Hello Life,” among others. Attendees had the unique opportunity to view the awarded works up close, experiencing the emotions and stories behind each frame between November 27 and 30.

Photography as a Means of Connection

Chen Xiaobo further reflected that mobile photography is not merely about cataloging daily life; it should invoke deeper observations and personal philosophical musings. Each photograph serves as an intimate dialogue with the world, capturing fleeting moments that connect us emotionally.

Huawei has been a staunch promoter of mobile photography culture globally, organizing photographic expeditions, publishing trend reports, and hosting community engagement initiatives. The HUAWEI XMAGE platform continues fostering connections, breaking down barriers across cultures and languages through the art of photography.
