Ensuring Safe Air Mobility: UTM Pilot at Expo 2025 Osaka

UTM Pilot Deployment at Expo 2025 Osaka

In an exciting development for advanced air mobility, Intent Exchange, Inc., NEC Corporation, and NTT DATA Japan Corporation have announced a pilot deployment of an Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management (UTM) system at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai. This progressive initiative aims to enhance safe, efficient airspace operations as drones and advanced air mobility (AAM) solutions take flight during the event.

Scheduled from August 16 to October 13, 2025, this pilot aims to validate usability from the perspective of operators and outline the functional requirements that will support future UTM developments. With the rise of drones and AAM technologies, efficient traffic management is paramount to ensure safety within low-altitude airspace utilized by conventional aircraft.

Background

As drones and AAM continue to gain traction as next-generation mobility solutions, the need for a robust framework for managing air traffic has become critical. Addressing these challenges, international efforts are underway to establish standardized regulations for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Traffic Management. In Japan, the
