FMC Corporation and Corteva Join Forces to Enhance Herbicide Technology Accessibility

Expansion of Herbicide Access in Agriculture

In a significant move within the agricultural sector, FMC Corporation and Corteva, Inc. have announced a strategic partnership focused on enhancing the availability of FMC's innovative herbicide technology known as Rimisoxafen. This new agreement paves the way for growers in both North and South America to tackle the challenging issue of herbicide-resistant weeds more effectively.

FMC, a leader in agricultural sciences, and Corteva, a company dedicated to providing advanced agricultural solutions, have entered into a co-exclusive strategic supply and licensing agreement that will allow both entities to expand their herbicide portfolios with this groundbreaking technology. Rimisoxafen is recognized for its dual mode of action, making it a powerful tool against prominent weed species like Amaranthus, which is commonly known to cause significant yield losses in soybean and corn crops.

A Game Changer for Farmers

The strategic partnership comes at a critical time as the agriculture industry grapples with increasing weed resistance that diminishes crop yields and threatens profitability. According to Leonardo Bastos, FMC's Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, this agreement ensures that a larger number of growers across the Americas will have access to one of the most innovative herbicide technologies developed in decades.

Bastos emphasizes that the collaborative effort aims to provide farmers with the necessary tools to manage resistant weeds effectively, thereby safeguarding their productivity and financial success. The agreement aligns with FMC's broader goals of facilitating the global adoption of Rimisoxafen technology across various crops and regions, enhancing its utility in diverse agricultural situations.

Terms of Collaboration

This partnership will remain in effect for the next ten years, during which FMC will retain ownership rights of the Rimisoxafen technology. Under the agreement, FMC will supply Corteva with the active ingredient necessary for formulation development. Both companies will work individually to create their respective premix herbicides, tailored specifically for corn and soybean markets across North and South America.

Corteva has agreed to an initial pre-purchase payment of $200 million to FMC for the herbicide's active ingredient, reinforcing both companies' commitment to rapid adoption and availability of Rimisoxafen. This collaboration is not only critical for weed management but also supports the long-term strategies of both organizations to provide improved solutions for farmers facing statewide and market-wide issues.

Significance of Rimisoxafen

The introduction of Rimisoxafen is noteworthy; its dual action mechanism potently addresses the rapidly developing weed resistance seen in species such as Palmer Amaranth and Waterhemp. These weeds have gained immunity to numerous herbicide classes, resulting in significant financial and agricultural setbacks. The Herbicide Resistance Action Committee has recently recognized Rimisoxafen as the industry's first herbicide based on this dual mode of action, showcasing its capability in tackling troublesome broadleaf weeds.

With the first commercial sales of Rimisoxafen expected by the end of the decade, pending necessary regulatory approvals, this technology holds promise for improving agricultural outcomes.
