New Program in Northeast Indiana Aims to Enhance Homeownership Accessibility

Hoosier Homes Plus: A New Era for Homeownership in Northeast Indiana

In a significant move to enhance accessibility to housing, Northeast Indiana is unveiling the Hoosier Homes Plus program, a down payment assistance initiative designed to ease the pathway to homeownership. This program aims to support a diverse range of buyers, whether they’re first-time or repeat purchasers, and is set to make its full debut during a public development Open House at Legacy Heights in Wabash on April 8th.

The launch of Hoosier Homes Plus comes with an initial funding infusion from the Northeast Indiana Strategic Development Commission (SDC). This initiative symbolizes a pivotal step towards fostering a supportive home-buying environment in the region. It provides essential financial resources and flexibility for buyers eager to settle in new communities like Legacy Heights, a distinctive neighborhood born from collaboration with the City of Wabash.

Andrew Briggs, a notable volunteer board member of both the SDC and the Northeast Indiana Regional Development Authority (RDA), emphasizes the core belief that robust communities are built on the foundation of strong households. He states, “Our region is continuously exploring innovative strategies to create homes in underserved areas, with Legacy Heights as a prime example. Hoosier Homes Plus represents another forward-thinking approach to motivate home purchases from the buyer's side, creating a beneficial scenario for both families and communities.”

Additionally, homebuyers at Legacy Heights can utilize Land Home Financial's Single Close Construction Loan, which combines construction and permanent financing within a single process, streamlining the journey to homeownership. Heather Presley-Cowen, CEO of Club 720 Development Corporation and Club 720, co-administrators of Hoosier Homes Plus, expresses excitement about integrating these resources to provide timely support for buyers. “This collaboration is vital as we strive to close the gap and usher more individuals and families into homes, which in turn boosts the wealth of our communities,” Presley-Cowen notes.

Mayor Scott Long of Wabash underscores the significance of Legacy Heights by stating, “This isn’t merely about new housing—it demonstrates the potential our region holds. With backing from RDA to facilitate this development and the SDC’s investment in Hoosier Homes Plus, we’re opening the door for many who have been waiting for such an opportunity. The City of Wabash welcomes new residents with open arms!”

This initiative marks a hopeful turn for housing accessibility in Northeast Indiana, paving the way for stronger communities and strengthening the fabric of the region’s neighborhoods.
