Exploring Identity Through Portraits
Leica Camera Inc. is proud to announce the upcoming solo exhibition by Rania Matar titled "Where Do I Go?" لوين روح, which will be on display at the Leica Gallery Boston from March 27, 2026, to May 31, 2026. The grand opening of this remarkable exhibition is set for April 9, 2026, from 6 to 8 PM.
This exhibition showcases a collection of portraits that Matar captured throughout Lebanon between 2021 and 2024. Known for her ability to weave narratives of female adolescence and womanhood, Matar’s work delves deep into the themes of personal and collective identity. Each image is meticulously composed, emphasizing the subjects' presence, agency, and resilience.
A Love Letter to Lebanese Women
"Where Do I Go?" serves as a photographic love letter directed towards the women of Lebanon. The year 2025 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the Lebanese Civil War, a poignant reminder of the challenges that have shaped the lives of many. As Lebanon continues to grapple with economic difficulties, ongoing violence, and the aftermath of the devastating Beirut Port Explosion, these themes resonate deeply within the local culture. Matar’s work poignantly reflects the urgent and personal dilemmas faced by young women in the country as they navigate their futures.
Having escaped Lebanon in 1984 during the Civil War, Matar is intimately familiar with the essence of conflict and resilience. Her portraits do not reduce the women to mere symbols of fragility; rather, they depict them as formidable individuals asserting their space and identity. Often set against the backdrop of abandoned structures, historic rooms, and striking landscapes, the women confidently gaze back at the viewer. Within these frames, history, identity, and geography converge, reflecting a universally pertinent question: Where do I go? Should I stay? Should I leave? What future remains possible?
