Greenberg Traurig Expands Its Finance Team with Ethan Buttner in New Jersey

Greenberg Traurig Welcomes Ethan Buttner to Enhance Finance Practice

In a strategic move to bolster its Finance Practice, the global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, has welcomed Ethan R. Buttner as of counsel in its New Jersey office. Buttner's extensive experience in asset servicing and complex financial matters reinforces the firm's commitment to providing exceptional legal support to financial institutions.

Previously holding the position of Senior Vice President and Counsel for Asset Servicing at The Bank of New York Mellon (BNY), Buttner has an impressive track record in representing major financial entities. He specializes in navigating intricate commercial matters, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and managing asset servicing transactions. His comprehensive knowledge encompasses custody, fund accounting, and administration, particularly for registered investment companies and exchange-traded products, along with middle-office operational transactions.

David Jay and David W. Oppenheim, Co-Managing Shareholders of Greenberg Traurig's New Jersey office, expressed their enthusiasm for Buttner's addition, stating, "Ethan's blend of in-house, transactional, and litigation experience will further strengthen our ability to advise financial institutions on complex matters. His practical perspective on commercial arrangements and regulatory challenges will be invaluable to our team."

Buttner's experience at BNY included negotiating intricate commercial contracts across various business sectors, where he played a key role in supporting mergers and acquisitions. His responsibilities extended to conducting due diligence reviews and negotiating purchase agreements. Additionally, he was instrumental in developing and maintaining standardized agreements for multiple service lines and contributed significantly to the launch of digital asset services.

Before his tenure with BNY, Buttner's career was marked by his role as a defender of financial institutions in various courts across New York and New Jersey. In these roles, he managed individual and class action lawsuits pertaining to consumer financial products, showcasing his adeptness at navigating the complexities of financial litigation.

As he embarks on this new chapter with Greenberg Traurig, Buttner shares his aspirations: "My goal is for my experience in asset servicing, regulatory frameworks, and transactional law to synergize with Greenberg Traurig's impressive team, enhancing the support we provide to financial institutions. I am eager to collaborate with attorneys specializing in financial services, such as Nathan Iacovino, and others throughout the region."

Buttner's roots in New Jersey run deep; he earned his Juris Doctor from Seton Hall University School of Law and holds dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Political Science and History from Rowan University.
