Tianjin University Marks 131 Years of Educational Excellence and Innovation

Celebrating 131 Years of Tianjin University

On October 2, 2026, Tianjin University (TJU), known as China's first modern university, proudly celebrates its 131st anniversary. This notable milestone not only highlights the institution's enduring legacy but also its significant contributions to global innovation and societal advancement. For over a century, TJU has addressed pressing world challenges, proving to be a forward-thinking hub of education and research.

A Legacy of Visionary Talent Development

The hallmark of TJU's 131st anniversary is its unwavering commitment to nurturing visionary talents. As a leading member of the National Engineering Education Emerging Technology Working Group, the university launched the "TJU 3.0 Plan"—an innovative framework designed to equip students with the skills necessary for future industries.

In alignment with evolving technological landscapes, Tianjin University has strategically focused on 11 cutting-edge fields, including artificial intelligence and embedded intelligence. The institution also pioneered the first undergraduate programs in brain science and technology, alongside biofabrication courses, demonstrating its role as a pioneer in emergent educational disciplines.

In its pursuit to fast-track promising young researchers, TJU implemented the "U35 Plan," which aims to guide exceptional talents under 35 into key academic positions. This initiative not only acknowledges their future potential but also creates a vibrant and dynamic research environment that encourages collaboration and innovation among brilliant young minds.

Transformative Impacts from Lab to Life

The convergence of top-tier national talents, industry experts, and leading enterprises has fostered a robust innovation ecosystem within TJU. This ecosystem has yielded remarkable achievements, particularly in medical technology. Among these, the "Shengong-Shengao" system has become China's first brain-computer interface (BCI) medical device approved for diagnosing cognitive decline. Developed by a team led by Professor Liu Xiuyun, this innovative system dramatically shortens the diagnostic timeframe for conditions like hydrocephalus from days to just 30 minutes. Moreover, over 20 devices from the "Shengong" series have transitioned successfully from laboratory development into clinical settings, offering tangible benefits to thousands of patients.

TJU's commitment to balancing scientific excellence with real-world needs resonates throughout its campus. This philosophy led to recognition in 2025, when researchers at the university contributed significantly to five National Science and Technology Awards, underscoring their impact on the national and international stage.

Furthermore, the university's academic exceptionalism has gained global recognition, with three disciplines—Chemistry, Engineering, and Materials Science—ranked among the best in the world according to Essential Science Indicators (ESI).

On the occasion of its 131st anniversary, Tianjin University is not merely celebrating its historical achievements. Its strategic focus on talent development, coupled with an unwavering dedication to the well-being of humanity, exemplifies the institution's proactive approach to shaping a better, more innovative future.
