Discovering the Elegance of Noh Costumes through Unique Handkerchiefs

Embracing the Beauty of Noh Costumes in Everyday Life

In the heart of Nihonbashi, Tokyo, CLASSICS the Small Luxury operates as a pioneer in the Japanese handkerchief industry, offering exquisite textile products through its parent company, Blooming Nakaniwa Co., Ltd. This time, they are set to launch a new handkerchief titled "Phoenix," in collaboration with the Gasho-en Noh Theatre Group based in Hyogo Prefecture, starting on September 16, 2026.

The focus is on Noh costumes, which are integral to traditional Japanese performing arts. CLASSICS the Small Luxury has previously collaborated with Gasho-en, creating beautiful handkerchiefs featuring various motifs inspired by Noh attire, such as "Kirin," "Plants," "Bamboo," and "Scattered Leaves." Noh, which has been passed down over approximately 650 years since the Muromachi period, emphasizes understated beauty by avoiding direct expressions, thus achieving a remarkable depth of artistry.

The Gasho-en group aims to carry the essence of traditional performing arts into the future, adapting them in unconventional ways to resonate with contemporary audiences. Their shared vision of delivering Japan's rich cultural heritage to a broader audience has led to this unique collaboration.

A Handkerchief Showcasing the Noble "Phoenix"

The new handkerchief, "Phoenix," celebrates the noble and auspicious motif of the mythical bird. It uses luxurious fabrics with designs that symbolize authority and sanctity, represented through shades of gold and ochre. The patterns prominently feature the "Phoenix" alongside motifs such as "Arabesque" and floral elements. In folklore, the Phoenix appears only under a wise ruler during peaceful times, making it a cherished symbol of marital harmony, prosperity, and enduring relationships. Additionally, the arabesque design conveys vitality and continuity, while the floral motifs reflect the beauty of the four seasons, together highlighting elegance and refinement. This exquisite design is truly befitting of noble personas, filled with hopes for peace and prosperity.

To capture the brilliance of these flamboyant costumes, artisans utilize the technique known as "tenassen" (hand printing), meticulously applying each color by hand. The rich use of gold pigment results in a luxurious piece that allows wearers to embrace the elegance of Noh in their everyday lives. By presenting the artistry of Noh through this handkerchief, it provides a gateway for individuals to connect with this sophisticated form of art.

In conjunction with the launch of "Phoenix," CLASSICS the Small Luxury will display the "ezuri" of this new creation in their stores. Ezuri refers to the test printing on paper to check for any discrepancies before applying the design to the actual fabric. The journey to crafting a handkerchief involves meticulous stages from design and mold creation to overlapping colors and accurately transferring the patterns onto cloth. The display will present the ezuri of "Phoenix," giving a glimpse into the vibrant color usage specific to Gasho-en's costumes and the craftsmanship behind the hand-printing technique.
