BayCare Health System Appoints Patrick Downes as President of Manatee Hospital
BayCare Health System Welcomes Patrick Downes as President of BayCare Hospital Manatee
BayCare Health System has made a significant decision by appointing Patrick Downes as the president of BayCare Hospital Manatee, the health system's 17th hospital, which is set to open in 2028 in Palmetto, Florida. This appointment underscores BayCare's commitment to enhancing healthcare services in the region and is anticipated to create new opportunities for collaboration within the healthcare community.
Patrick Downes, who has been an integral part of BayCare, will maintain his role as president of St. Joseph's Hospital-South located in Riverview, Florida. This strategic dual leadership is expected to foster synergies between the two hospitals due to their geographic proximity. Kimberly Guy, BayCare's Chief Operating Officer, emphasized that Downes was an obvious choice for this leadership position, given his expertise in managing hospitals in rapidly growing markets and his involvement in the development of BayCare Hospital Manatee.
The BayCare Hospital Manatee, currently under construction on Moccasin Wallow Road near I-75 and I-275, aims to serve as the only not-for-profit hospital in Manatee County and will stand as the first hospital located north of the Manatee River. The hospital will boast 154 private patient rooms, with future expansion plans that could increase the count to 207 beds based on community requirements. Downes expressed enthusiasm about the new hospital, indicating that both residents and physicians in the area are eager for the healthcare services to be introduced.
As part of its offerings, the new hospital will encompass a wide range of services such as obstetrics, neonatal care, diagnostic and interventional services, cardiology, surgical services, urology, and gastroenterology. Current plans also include the opening of an adjacent BayCare HealthHub in 2026 that will combine health and wellness amenities offering outpatient services and physician offices.
Downes has had notable success in leading St. Joseph's Hospital-South, reflected in its impressive record of 13 consecutive 'A' grades for quality and patient safety awarded by The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization focused on improving hospital safety standards. His leadership has also seen the introduction of various improvements, including additional units for patient care and new surgical technologies to enhance treatment effectiveness.
Before his tenure at BayCare, Downes held several executive positions at various healthcare facilities in Florida and South Carolina, demonstrating his extensive experience in the healthcare leadership arena. He holds both a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Florida State University.
Enhancing Community Health

It also administers one of Florida's largest home care services, serving the needs of numerous households seamlessly.
In summary, Patrick Downes' new leadership role at BayCare Hospital Manatee resonates not only with institutional strategy but also reflects a response to community healthcare needs. His vision and proactive approach aim to enhance patient care, making substantive contributions to the healthcare landscape of Manatee County and beyond.
