Exciting Sports Event 'Sport GOMI' Coming to Yamagata City
On June 14, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Yamagata City will host the exciting cleanup event known as 'Sport GOMI' at the commercial facility 'Nanakata Town Lultas'. This unique event combines teamwork and competition, as participants will collect trash in designated areas and earn points based on the type and amount of garbage they gather.
Event Overview
This year's Sport GOMI is organized by a collaboration between various local groups, including Hooju Living Service Co., Yamagata Town Development Corporation, and Yamagata University Co-op OH, ONE!?. The event aims to strengthen community bonds and revitalize the city center while promoting environmental awareness through an engaging and competitive format.
The event will be hosted by radio personality Aya Matsuura, who is known for her work in the Yamagata region. Additionally, the Yamagata City mascot and treasure promotion ambassador, Hanagata Beni-chan, will make a special appearance to cheer on participants and add to the atmosphere.
Sport GOMI, which started in Japan in 2008, has grown significantly with around 1,500 events and 150,000 participants across the country. It combines sports and community service, encouraging participants to not only beautify the environment but also strengthen social connections and awareness through teamwork.
The Values of Sport GOMI
One of the key benefits of this activity is its focus on community engagement. By captivating participants' attention on environmental issues, it fosters a sense of social responsibility and encourages team effort to achieve common goals. Participants can easily join the event without prior experience, making it accessible to all members of the community.
Service organization Social Sports Initiative, led by Kenichi Mamizuka, conceived this innovative format that has found fans not only throughout Japan but also across 20 countries in six continents.
Last Year’s Success and Future Goals
During the 2024 edition of Sport GOMI in Yamagata City, 15 teams collected an impressive weight of 37.5 kg of trash. The venue of Nanakuta Town Lultas is particularly suitable for such events, managed by Hooju Living Service Co., which oversees various commercial activities in the area, including popular local shops that serve as key community landmarks.
Following the success of last year’s cleanup event, the organizers are committed to continuing this initiative to further revitalize the city and enhance community ties through enjoyable and impactful activities.
