December's Fraud of the Month initiative aims to inform the elderly and their caregivers about the dangers of these deceptive practices that specifically target Medicare beneficiaries.

According to María Álvarez, the executive director of StateWide, the holiday season, often associated with giving, sees a rise in unsolicited offers for durable medical equipment. Scammers frequently reach out to Medicare recipients with promises of free or low-cost orthopedic devices, such as back, knee, or wrist braces. “These could lead to unnecessary equipment being sold, compromising not only finances but also health,” Álvarez warns.

The Tactics of Scammers



Fraudsters often use several methods to lure seniors into their schemes. Common tactics include:
  • - Unsolicited Calls and Advertisements: Seniors may receive calls claiming they qualify for free equipment, which is often a ruse to obtain their Medicare information for fraudulent billing.
  • - Baiting with False Offers: Scammers promise low-cost medical devices that required personal information, which they can exploit later.
In many cases, once they have a person's Medicare details, they can easily submit fraudulent claims which wreak havoc on the beneficiary's legitimate healthcare access.

The Impacts of DME Fraud



Receiving DME that was not requested can distort a patient's medical identity, directly affecting the quality of care they receive. Healthcare providers might struggle to deliver appropriate treatments when incorrect or unnecessary devices interfere with clinical decisions.
