Canadian Pacific Kansas City Achieves Record Grain Transport Milestones in April 2026
Canadian Pacific Kansas City Sets New April Monthly Grain Transport Records
Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), one of North America's leading railways, announced a significant achievement in its operations. In April 2026, CPKC set a new record for the transportation of Canadian grain, successfully moving 2.9 million metric tonnes (MMT) of grain products. This milestone not only exceeds the previous record set in April 2020 but also exemplifies CPKC's commitment to enhancing its operational efficiency and supply chain management.
A Look at the Numbers
As part of the performance metrics, 30,381 carloads of grain were transported last month, further establishing a new high for the month of April. This surge in movement indicates CPKC's effective logistical strategies and the growing demand for Canadian grain products. Elizabeth Hucker, Vice-President of Sales and Marketing for Bulk, expressed her satisfaction with the company's performance, stating, "We have started 2026 with a record first quarter for the movement of Canadian grain and have set monthly records in three of the first four months of the year."
The first quarter of 2026 alone marked an impressive 7.2 MMT of grain transported, surpassing the previously held record of the first quarter in 2021. CPKC's year-to-date performance signifies a robust grain transport cycle, with over 21.9 MMT of grain moved through the first 38 weeks of the 2025-2026 crop year. These figures are the highest recorded since the record-setting 2020-2021 crop year.
Strategic Investments and Planning
CPKC attributes its success to extensive investments in the grain supply chain, along with collaborative efforts with customers across various networks. Hucker also highlighted the necessity for all supply chain participants, including loading facilities and terminal operators, to operate at full capacity to maintain this momentum. The company underlined the importance of effective planning and demand forecasting to enhance service delivery for its clients and the broader economy.
Earlier this year, CPKC set new monthly records beginning in January by moving 2.395 MMT, which broke the existing record for that month set in 2023. Each subsequent month reinforced the growth trajectory: in February, the company transported 2.232 MMT, also surpassing the figures from the same month in the previous year, 2021.
Looking Ahead
With these records in place, CPKC is optimistic about its ongoing operations and future logistics strategies. Annual plans detailing the Canadian grain service outlook are available on the company's website, underscoring its transparency and commitment to customer service. CPKC continues to evolve as a crucial player in North America's rail transport sector, linking Canada, the United States, and Mexico through a single-line railway network.
The railway spans approximately 20,000 route miles and employs around 20,000 railroaders, ensuring that customers benefit from unparalleled rail service and extensive network reach. CPKC is dedicated to supporting its clients through comprehensive freight transportation services, logistics solutions, and supply chain expertise.
As CPKC moves forward, it remains focused on delivering exceptional value and operational resilience as it adapts to the needs of the market, thereby reinforcing its role as a leader in the North American rail industry.
