Dewberry Appoints David J. Mahoney as New CEO, Leading into Its 70th Year

Dewberry Appoints David J. Mahoney as CEO

On February 18, 2026, Dewberry, a respected name among professional services firms, announced David J. Mahoney, PE, as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective from April 1, 2026. The firm, which has built a solid reputation in serving both public and private sectors, is transitioning into a new era under Mahoney's leadership. His appointment follows Donald E. Stone, Jr.'s decision to retire, where he will continue to offer his expertise in an advisory role until the end of June 2026.

The announcement was made by Executive Chairman Barry K. Dewberry, who expressed confidence in Mahoney's abilities. He stated, “Dave has the right experience and energy to guide our firm into the future. With our growth trajectory remaining strong, we believe he possesses the leadership strength and respect among our peers to deliver the results that our clients and communities expect.”

Mahoney has had an instrumental role in expanding Dewberry's portfolio, particularly in managing large and complex projects. He has a substantial background in alternative project delivery practices, leading a portfolio that includes over 175 design-build initiatives valued at more than $23 billion. His contributions have largely benefited agencies involved in transportation, water utilities, and a variety of key clients.

Previously, Mahoney served as Dewberry's president in 2025, where he significantly influenced the company's operations and risk management programs. His extensive involvement extended across all business lines and support services within Dewberry, thereby marrying project delivery with effective risk management. His strategic decision-making has been pivotal in many major projects, where he often determined risk profiles and negotiated favorable terms for the firm.

Additionally, Mahoney has a remarkable track record within Dewberry's transportation practice, which he has overseen since 2017. This sector alone has generated over $1.5 billion in revenue while overseeing projects that cumulatively surpass $25 billion in construction value. The transportation agencies he has worked with include notable departments from Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, North Carolina, Florida, and California. Such a breadth of experience positions him uniquely in a market where regulatory and temporal challenges are ever-present. Mahoney's intricate understanding of project execution allows him to mentor the next generation of leaders within the company, many of whom manage multi-billion-dollar public-private partnerships today.

David Mahoney's career spans more than four decades and began at Dewberry in 1986. He progressed from a project engineer role to managing intricate projects that have greatly impacted the Greater Washington, D.C. area. His hands-on experience has included several high-profile undertakings, such as the Dulles Corridor Metrorail project and various phases of the Intercounty Connector in Maryland.

Mahoney holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from South Dakota State University, which he earned in 1984. Under his leadership, Dewberry not only aims to navigate the challenges of tomorrow but also aspires to uphold its commitment to client service while delivering expertly crafted solutions tailored to address the most pressing community needs.
