Innovative Muscle Thickness Measurement Project for Seniors in Iwaki City, Fukushima

In an exciting initiative set to launch this October, LowTech Medical Japan Co., Ltd., led by President Takashi Iimura, is partnering with Iwaki City in Fukushima Prefecture to conduct a groundbreaking verification experiment. This project aims to measure the thickness of leg muscles in over ten seniors using advanced ultrasound technology. The goal is to visualize muscle condition, particularly the quadriceps, and support early detection of muscle weakening. The initiative is part of the "Hamadori Revitalization Living Lab - Science x Public-Private Collaborative Town Development" program, organized by the Reconstruction Agency, with collaboration from the medical corporation Shuyukai Sunlife Yumoto and Medical Creation University.

As people age, maintaining muscle mass is crucial for preventing declines in mobility and avoiding the risks of falls. According to research by the Japan Agency for Longevity Science Promotion Foundation, inadequate exercise can lead muscle mass to decrease by approximately 10% by the age of 70—representing around 40% of adult body weight. In response to this issue, the project will utilize the portable ultrasound device 'KINDO' to observe the condition of muscles related to walking and confirm its effectiveness.

The KINDO device is designed for ease of use, allowing even non-medical professionals to measure muscle thickness efficiently. Its ability to visualize changes in muscle thickness in real time means that users can monitor their exercise results and detect early signs of muscle decline. Furthermore, the device connects to an iPad or iPhone via Wi-Fi, making it flexible enough for use in various settings—whether at a facility or at home. This project not only focuses on measurement but also aims to collaborate with physical therapists and trainers to develop exercise programs tailored to individual needs for safe practice.

President Takashi Iimura emphasizes the importance of this initiative: "Our commitment at LowTech Medical Japan is to fundamentally address medical and welfare needs by developing innovative healthcare solutions that improve people's lives. After experiencing cancer twice, I have a profound appreciation for the role of hospitals. However, they primarily treat diseases, whereas maintaining health requires establishing good lifestyle habits independently. Having understood the importance of exercise but also the frustration that can come from not seeing immediate results, this motivated the development of our service."

Project Overview

  • - Project Name: Hamadori Revitalization Living Lab - Developing a Frailty Prevention Program Combining Portable Ultrasound and Exercise
  • - Project Duration: October 2025 to March 2026
  • - Details: Observing and evaluating the quadriceps using the portable ultrasound 'KINDO'.

This undertaking is designed to promote healthy living and contribute to a more independent society for the elderly. The opportunity for broad exposure through media coverage of the project is greatly appreciated.

In conclusion, the initiative spearheaded by LowTech Medical Japan serves as both a preventative measure and a supportive community effort aimed at enhancing the physical well-being of seniors—an essential step towards healthier aging.
