Matthew Basler Appointed New CEO of AgriBank, Transitioning Leadership in 2027
In a significant leadership change, AgriBank has officially announced the appointment of Matthew Basler as its new CEO, set to commence on February 22, 2027. This announcement comes as the bank prepares for a transition following the retirement of long-term leader Jeffrey Swanhorst, who has dedicated an impressive 44 years of service to the Farm Credit system.
Matthew Basler, known for his extensive background in financial services, particularly with Bank of America, is stepping into this key role. Previously, he served as the Managing Director and Global Head of Asia Pacific Capital Markets, operating out of Hong Kong. This rich experience equips him with a unique perspective that aligns with AgriBank's mission to support rural America.
The decision to appoint Basler followed a comprehensive search by AgriBank’s Board of Directors in collaboration with Spencer Stuart. AgriBank Board Chair Chris Roberts expressed confidence in Basler's ability, stating, "Matthew brings more than three decades of leadership experience spanning investment banking, capital markets, and credit. His broad and deep experience positions him to build on AgriBank's strong foundation and lead us into the future."
In his new role, Basler aims to continue the positive momentum established by Swanhorst, emphasizing the importance of fostering relationships throughout the agricultural sector. Having previously advised various institutions within the Farm Credit System, Basler is well-versed in the intricacies of supporting farmers and ranchers with essential funding and financial solutions. "I look forward to building upon my longstanding relationships across the Farm Credit System. Helping our Association-owners deliver needed funding and financial solutions to U.S. farmers, ranchers, and other borrowers will remain our top priority," he remarked enthusiastically.
Basler's tenure at Bank of America lasted over two decades, where he cultivated a robust understanding of the financial landscape. In his most recent position in Hong Kong, he was instrumental in leading a team that operated across a wide range of capital market products from 2020 to 2026. Prior to that, he held a significant position as managing director and group head of Financial Institution Capital Markets at Bank of America in New York.
The transition period will see Swanhorst serve as a senior advisor from February 22 until his retirement, ensuring a smooth handover of responsibilities. Basler's appointment marks a pivotal moment for AgriBank, which plays a crucial role in delivering financial products and services tailored to rural communities and agriculture.
AgriBank operates within the cooperative structure of the nationwide Farm Credit System, predominantly owned by local Farm Credit Associations. This unique setup allows it to provide critical funding and financial solutions to these Associations, which in turn serve farmers and ranchers across a comprehensive 15-state region from Wyoming to Ohio and Minnesota to Arkansas.
As Basler steps into the leadership role, stakeholders across the Farm Credit System are optimistic about the direction AgriBank will take under his stewardship. The emphasis on community engagement and support for rural America's financial needs will undoubtedly remain central to AgriBank’s ethos.
