Thomas E. Menighan Recognized with the 2026 Remington Honor Medal
The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) proudly announces that Thomas E. Menighan, BSPharm, MBA, ScD, has been selected to receive the esteemed
2026 Remington Honor Medal. This award, named after influential community pharmacist Joseph P. Remington, signifies the highest accolade in pharmacy, honoring outstanding contributions to the field.
Michael D. Hogue, PharmD, CEO of APhA, emphasized the significance of the medal, stating, _"The Remington Honor Medal represents the pinnacle of achievement in our profession." He described Menighan as a humble leader focused on uplifting others, making him an ideal choice for this honor. Menighan's extensive impact on various aspects of pharmacy underscores this appreciation.
The formal presentation of the Remington Honor Medal will occur during the APhA's 2026 Annual Meeting & Exposition, where Menighan will deliver the highly anticipated annual Remington Lecture.
A Career of Influence and Innovation
Menighan’s career has greatly influenced the evolution of pharmacy practice, improving patient care and health policy. His leadership is marked by innovation across nearly all pharmacy sectors. He remarked, _"This award is recognition to be shared with the many partners, mentors, and colleagues who have inspired our collective advancements in practice."
Menighan served as CEO and executive vice president of APhA from 2009 to 2020. His leadership saw significant advancements, including efforts to secure provider status for pharmacists nationwide. Under his guidance, key initiatives were launched, such as the Pharmacy Library and Pharmacy Profiles, while also overseeing the growth of the Board of Pharmacy Specialties and APhA Foundation, to name a few.
Furthermore, Menighan's influence extends beyond APhA. As Assistant Dean for Community Engagement at the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy, he co-founded PursueCare and PursueCareRx to offer pharmacy and telehealth services to those in recovery. Additionally, he volunteers as Chair of the West Virginia Drug Intervention Institute, focusing on educating youth about safe medication use and placing naloxone distribution boxes near areas prone to overdose incidents.
His leadership roles have included significant positions with the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), and the Pharmacy Quality Alliance (PQA). An entrepreneur at heart, Menighan has made strides in various companies involved in pharmacy and healthcare delivery, including community and online pharmacy services as well as drug utilization review initiatives.
Committed to Future Generations
Originally from Sistersville, West Virginia, Menighan earned his bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from West Virginia University, followed by an MBA from Averett College. His accomplishments have not gone unnoticed; he has received numerous honors, such as the Bowl of Hygeia award and several fellowships from APhA and FIP. He was also recognized with honorary doctorates from the University of Charleston and West Virginia University.
In a commitment to nurturing future pharmacy leaders, Menighan and his wife Bonny established the APhA Menighan Leadership Scholarship and the WVU Menighan Leadership Fund for Pharmacy. He actively mentors emerging professionals and runs a consultancy focusing on technology adoption and practice advancements. Menighan resides in Annapolis, Maryland, with Bonny, while his daughter Caroline works as a nurse practitioner specializing in recovery care.
