Report on the Palau Islands Battlefield Fieldwork Project as Part of the 80th Anniversary of Post-War Endeavors

Report on the Palau Islands Battlefield Fieldwork

The Japan Junior Chamber (Japan JC) is set to hold a report meeting on the battlefield fieldwork conducted on Palau's Peliliu Island, which took place from August 19 to August 22, 2025, as a part of their project commemorating the 80th anniversary of the post-war era. This meeting will take place on September 27, 2025, from 3 PM to 4 PM at the Vision Center in Shinagawa, Tokyo, and will also be accessible online via Zoom.

Objectives of the Fieldwork

The main goal of this project is to educate young generations, who have no direct experience with war, about the history and significance of wartime events. The participants, comprising 22 high school and university students, will share their learnings and insights gained during the fieldwork in a presentation format during the report meeting. This initiative aims to cultivate a deeper understanding of peace and the importance of historical context in mitigating future conflicts.

Details of the Report Meeting

  • - Date and Time: September 27, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM, with reception starting at 2:45 PM.
  • - Venue: Conference Room 304, Vision Center Shinagawa, 4-10-8 Takanawa, Minato-ku, Tokyo

Attendees will include students who participated in the fieldwork. Some will join the meeting remotely via Zoom to share their experiences. The session will feature an overview of the fieldwork, along with video presentations and student speeches highlighting what they learned. Additionally, the meeting will involve declarations on actions contributing to future peace initiatives.

Rich Historical Context of Peliliu Island

Peliliu Island, known for its significant battles during World War II, remains rich in historical monuments reflecting its turbulent past. The project enables contemporary youths to connect with the profound historical narratives associated with these locations. Notably, the island currently undergoes development activities led by the U.S. military, which raises concerns about the evolving political landscape.

Accompanying the students was Senta Uonome, the creator of the manga "War Meals," who shared insights on the historical sites visited, contributing an engaging perspective on the relevance of these locations. The group also had the opportunity to meet with the Vice President of Palau, fostering international ties and discussions on peace education.

Invitation for Media Coverage

Japan JC extends an invitation to media representatives to cover the report meeting. The event will provide various materials, including photos and videos from the fieldwork for press use. Thus, we encourage interested parties to register for attendance via the provided Google Form before the deadline on September 26, 2025, at 10 PM.

The significance of this project cannot be overstated, as it strives to bridge the gap between past and present, nurturing a culture of peace among the youth while enlightening them about the sacrifices made for liberty and justice. By attending this report meeting, participants and media alike will gain invaluable insights into the importance of remembering history to foster a more peaceful future.

Media Coverage Achievements

The project has already garnered attention with coverage in major media outlets such as the Mainichi Shimbun and Saitama Shimbun.
